Garma eyes second GM norm after topping Asian Seniors Chess Championships PhilBoxing.com Tue, 13 Nov 2018 TAGAYTAY CITY ? Two-time Olympiad veteran International Master Chito Garma is setting his sights in competing in 17th Asian Continental Chess Championships (Open and Women's Championships) following his successful conquest of the recent 9th Asian Seniors Chess Championship (Standard event) at the Tagaytay International Convention Center late Sunday. "I have an ELO rating of 2317 at the moment and have one GM. All I need is to get two more (GM) and raise my ELO rating to 2500 in order to be called a Grandmaster. My next target will be to get my second GM norm." said Garma, a habitue of Marikina Chess Club of sportsman Thaddeus Antonio "Boy Bolok" Santos Jr. The former University of Manila (UM) standout Garma defeated Arena Grandmaster Angelito Camer of Australia in the ninth and final round to finish first in the 9th Asian Seniors Chess Championship (Standard event) with eight points on seven wins and two draws in the tournament organized by the Asian Chess Federation and hosted by the Tagaytay City government thru Cavite 7th District Rep. Abraham ?Bambol? Ng-Tolentino Jr. and Tagaytay City Mayor Agnes Tolentino. With his feat, the 54-years-old Garma pocketed the top prize of US$500 out of the total purse of US$3,000, but more important his first of the three GM norm. ?Again IM (Chito) Garma made the country proud, in behalf of the Marikina Chess Club we would like to congratulate him for his feat," said long-time supporter Sportsman Thaddeus Antonio "Boy Bolok" Santos Jr., former director of the Philippine Chess Federation. Another Olympiad veteran International Master Petronio Roca, finished second to Garma with 6.5 points on five wins, three draws and one loss, and earned US$400. Fide Master Oleg Rinas of Kazakshtan and International Master Angelo Young shared third to fourth places with six points, while National Master Carlo Lorena wound up fifth with 5.5 points. Last year?s champion, Grandmaster Eugene Torre beat International Master Aitkazy Baimurzin of Kazakhstan to finish with seven points. Torre settled for the US$350 prize for the over-65 category. National Master Caturla and fellow Olympian National Master Rosendo Bandal Jr. finished second and third with 6.5 and 5.5 points, respectively in the over-65 category. Caturla got an outright Fide Master title. Woman Fide Master Helen Milligan of New Zealand emerged as the top female player for the fourth consecutive time with 4/8. Milligan edged Almagul Chakeyeva of Kazkahstan, who had 3.5/8, for the US$300 top prize. Olympian Milagros Emperado settled for the US$100 prize for the over-65 category. Mike Lapitan served as the tournament director, while Patrick Lee was the supervising arbiter, along with Elias Lao, Lito Abril, Hubert Estrella, Ricky Navalta, Jojo Lumbania and Dr. Alfredo Paez. Meanwhile, Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA) president Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe, close confidante of Garma had something to say.
