Ginebra, Alaska join Magnolia to quarterfinal round By Eddie Alinea PhilBoxing.com Tue, 30 Oct 2018 Victories over separate opponents gained for Barangay Ginebra and Alaska formal entry into the quarterfinal round of the PBA Governors? Cup on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum. The Kings subdued sister team and erstwhile league-leading Magnolia Hotshots, 93-86, while the Aces downed a fighting NorthPort Batang Pier, 95-85, to both advance to the Round of Eight with their magic eight wins. The victories, likewise, gifted the Kings and the Aces the incentive of having to win only once over whoever will cross their paths to make it to the semifinal phase of the 12- team 43rd season-ending conference. Except for the fact that Ginebra succeeded in dislodging Magnolia from the top of the standing, the loss didn?t have any effect on the Hotshots? chance to move on to the next round as the latter had already secured their place thereat earlier. The Hotshots though dropped into a tie with the Aces for second and third positions with their similar 8-3 win-loss record behind now temporary leaders Kings? 8-2. With the Kings, the Hotshots and the Aces securely glued in their respective places in the top four, it is now up to the Phoenix Fuel Masters the Blackwater Elite, both at 7-3, who between them will complete the quarterfinal cast. Loser of this contest drops to fifth in a tie, probably with San Miguel Beer (6-4). The Elite and the Fuel Masters, who are both in quest for their highest finish ever since acquiring their respective franchise, collide on he final day on the elimination round on November 4, the same day Ginebra battles ach-rival Talk ?N Tex in another crucial matchup that will determine the Katropa?s final standing going into the next round. A win by Ginebra glued the Kings at the top of the standing and will pair them against the team that will end up eighth. An upset triumph by TnT creates a four-way tie among the Kings, the Hotshots, the Aces and whoever wins between the Elite and the Fuel Masters who will all end up with identical 8-3 slates. All ties will be broken by the PBA quotient system. Quarterfinal round format calls for the top team after the elims playing he no. 8 team, second best team v no. 7, third be seam against no. 6, and fourth best vs no. 5. There are actually only two remaining playing days left before the elims brings down its curtains. On November 3, NLEX (5-5) battles Rain or Shine (2-8), while San Miguel Beer takes on Meralco (4-6) in a twin bill that will decide which positions the Road Warriors, the Beermen and the Bolts will land in the Final Eight. Like the Katropas, the Beermen, the Bolts and the Road Warriors look unreachable for the Elasto Painters (2-8) and the Batang Pier (2-9) to topple from their berths in the quarters.
