Liza Elorde: Flash Elorde Saved His Grandson Bai By Alex P. Vidal PhilBoxing.com Wed, 21 Nov 2007 Boxing business manager Liza Elorde, mother of fast-rising prospect Bai Elorde admitted that "I almost lost my heart" when she saw the young boxer getting decked and given a mandatory eight count by referee Virgilio Garcia in his four-round joust with rugged Glen Mondol last Nov. 14 at the Mall of Asia. Unheralded Mondol broke the young Elorde's sphinx-like defense in the second stanza and shocked the crowd by knocking down the grandson of the late legendary Gabriel "Flash" Elorde with a right to the left ear. Egged by his father, Johnny and trainer Mario Lumacad, to go for the broke, Bai Elorde managed to weather to storm in the third and fourth frames to eke out a majority decision win, his fifth in as many outings. "It was a scary win. I almost lost my heart ! Anyway, maybe its a lesson for him to be on guard always," said the mother Elorde who watched the fight some 20 meters away from the ringside together with members of the Elorde family. Liza Elorde admitted she was the most scared person in the venue that afternoon. "When he was knocked down, I really prayed hard and even ask his grandfather Flash to bring him up. I said if boxing is really for him then let his grandson stand and continue the fight," Liza Elorde said. "I guess Bai will learn more from this experience." Bai was applauded by delegates and guests attending the week-long WBC convention led by the organization's top honcos who watched the fight at ringside when he was introduced as "the grandson of the late former world junior lightweight champion Grabriel Flash Elorde."
