PhilBoxing.com

The Celebrity Poker Tournament will be held tonight at the Players' Den in Malate, Manila with the winner taking away a free entry to the World Boxing Council (WBC) Celebrity Charity Poker Tournament on November 13 and 14 at the Airport Casino Filipino in Paranaque.

Several local media, music, sports, television and film celebrities are expected to join the November 8 free roll tournament to get a chance to play with international sports celebrities like Oscar dela Hoya, Lennox Lewis, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns and many others and win a BMW car and millions of pesos.

The local celebrity tournament will start at around 8:00 p.m. at Players' Den located on Mabini Street , Malate near Malate Church and just across the former Hobbit House Bar and Restaurant. Aside from free entry to the WBC Celebrity Charity Poker Tournament to play for the millions, cash prizes and gift checks to vistamar are up for grabs.

Players' Den business manager Joe Bartolome said the prize, a WBC Celebrity Charity Poker tournament entry ticket, is worth US$550 for the chance to play in the once in a lifetime event with the worlds sports superstars and win a luxury car and millions of pesos.

Last Thursday, President Arroyo declared November as WBC month citing the importance of the event to promote the country as a world class convention center and prime tourist destination.

Arroyo also enjoined all government agencies and instrumentalities including government-owned and controlled corporations and local government units to extend assistance to the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) headed by Chairman Eric Buhain to ensure the success of the prestigious event.

Buhain said that during their convention last year, the Philippines was voted unanimously by the WBC Chairman and 60 members of the Board of Governors and heads of the 14 Boxing organizations/federations as the host of the 2007 or 45th WBC Convention.

The Philippines last hosted the WBC Convetion 37 years ago coinciding with the 1974 Thrilla in Manila fight between Muhammad Ali and Smokin Joe Frazier.
