PACMAN INT'L 9-BALL OPEN GETS UNDERWAY By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Mon, 22 Oct 2007 Even in the heat of a busy schedule, Filipino boxing sensation Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao still has the time to indulge in other sports that has caught his fancy. Also an avid pool player, Pacquiao has put his money where his mouth is with the inaugural of the Manny Pacquiao International 9-Ball Open. The qualifying round gets underway on October 24 to 26 at the Hobbies of Asia Building in Pasay City. The Last 16 will be held at the SM Mall of Asia on October 27. Two of the country's top cue artists - Efren "Bata" Reyes and Francisco "Django" Bustamante - will be bannering the P2-million event. Reigning double world champion Ronato Alcano, Dennis Orcullo, Marlon Manalo, Rodolfo Luat, Ramil Gallego, Warren Kiamco and Lee Vann Corteza will join Reyes and Bustamante in the tournament where the top finisher will receive P1 million and the runner-up P500,000. Alcano is fresh from a runner-up finish in the 32nd annual US Open 9-Ball at the Chesapeake Convention Center in Chesapeake, Virginia over the weekend. "Inaasahan ko na mahigit sa 100 participant ang lalaro. May inaasahan din tayong foreign player, parang practice na din nila ito bago mag WPC next month ng pool wizards," tournament director Julie "Falcon" Guevarra said referring the forthcoming 2007 World Pool Championship on Nov. 3 to 11 at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. This is not the first time that Pacquiao has organized a pool tournament. In December last year, the Manny Pacquiao Panersera-Pababa 10-ball tourney was held at the Rock and Roll billiard hall in Malate while the Manny Pacquiao 10-ball Open in General Santos City was held only last February. Benson Palses and Roberto Gomez won the said events, respectively. Solar Sports, home of the Filipino Cable channel will air the event, according to Guevarra.
