PE?ALOSA GETS CONTRACT TO FIGHT DE LEON ON DEC. 8 By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Fri, 12 Oct 2007 Reigning WBO bantam king Gerry Pe?alosa will get his cherished rematch with WBO superbantam champion Daniel Ponce De Leon earlier than expected if he agrees to a proposed December 8 showdown with the power-punching Mexican. The bout is slated to be on the undercard of the December 8 Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Ricky Hatton superbout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The MGM was also the venue to history's richest boxing event, the May 5 Oscar De la Hoya-Floyd Mayweather battle which broke all Vegas attendance and pay-per-view records. Reports coming out of Las Vegas that the holdup to the December 8 bout is the purse money being offered to Pe?alosa, which sources say the Filipino boxing champ plans to negotiate to get a better deal. "The money being offered is reasonable, but Pe?alosa believes that considering the caliber of Ponce De Leon, that he should be given an amount commensurate to the risk involved," said a source. Earlier, it had been revealed that a Pe?alosa-De Leon fight is being groomed to take place sometime in February in the Philippines. Another Mexican fighter, ex-world champ Jorge Arce, has also expressed interest at fighting the popular Pe?alosa, even trying to start a fight at the Mandalay Bay last Sunday when he approached the Filipino boxing champ right after the Pacquiao-Barrera showdown, and verbally challenged Pe?alosa to a fight.
