PINOY NELSON VILLANUEVA IS THIS YEAR'S MALAYSIA RAPID OPEN CHESS CHAMPION

Malaysia---Fide Master (FM) Nelson Villanueva topped the 8th Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng Perak Grand Prix Chess Championship 2017 last August 13 at the Hotel Syuen, Ipoh, Malaysia.

The La Carlota City, Negros Occidental native Villanueva collected 6.0 points on five wins and two draws to claim the top honors in the 20 minute time control rapid open seven round Swiss System event.

Filipinos Fide Master (FM) Alekhine Nouri and National Master (NM) Stewart Manaog completed the country's domination by occupying the second to third place honors with 5.5 points and 5.0 points, respectively.

Also with 5.0 points were Looi Xin Hao (4th place), Ahmad Jamal Husni b Jamaluddin (5th place), Jax Tham (6th place),Yip Yong (7th place), Ooi Zhi Yang (8th place) and
Jackie Chan Seng (9th place) of Malaysia.

Villanueva, a former mainstay of the star-studded Rizal Technological University (RTU) Mandaluyong Chess Team, won his first five matches against Tan Yong Hau, Yip Yong, Low Jun Jian of Malaysia, FM Alekhine Nouri and NM Stewart Manaog of the Philippines, in order. He drew his last two round assignment against Looi Xin Hao and Ahmad Jamal Husni b Jamaluddin of Malaysia.

It shall be recalled that Villanueva also won the 6th AMK CC All Women's & Family Chess Challenge 2017 - Family Men (Open) chess championship last July 30, 2017 at the Ang Mo Kio Community Centre in Singapore.Villanueva tallied five wins and two draws to raised his total 6.0 points after seven games of play.
