UFC FIGHT NIGHT? SINGAPORE: HOLM vs. CORREIA A KNOCKOUT PhilBoxing.com Sun, 18 Jun 2017 Singapore ? Last night, over 8,400 mixed martial arts (MMA) fans witnessed a night of world-class MMA action at the Singapore Indoor Stadium as UFC returned to Asia with Fight Night Singapore: Holm vs Correia. Throughout the evening, the crowd enjoyed a mix of fast-paced stand up action, and tactical grappling as some of the world?s top fighters took to the Octagon for 12 exhilarating bouts. Among some of the evening?s highlights were a debut welterweight win by former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos, a submission win by John Tuck over former champion Takanori Gomi, and a highly tactical victory by Colby Covington over #7 Dong Hyun Kim. Commenting on his win, Covington said ?Nothing surprised me about this fight. I knew what his strengths were coming into the Octagon and so I prepared for that. I?m so honored to have competed against a legend and to be here fighting in Asia. This win should now put me in the top 10 of the welterweight division.? Wowing fans further was a high-octane flyweight bout between Ulka Sasaki and Justin Scoggins, building on an intense weigh in the day before, both fighters went blow for blow before seeing both fighters. Sasaki said ?He was much tougher, stronger and had more variety than expected. When i grappled with him i felt like i could control him well, he had much power so i decided to not put my full bodyweight into it and instead wait for my opportunity.? In the co-main event of the evening, Marcin Tybura put on a brave display against a resurgent Andrei Arlovski to take the victory by unanimous decision. The victory was a fifth for Tybura and secures his place as one of the top contenders in the heavyweight division. In the main event, both fighters began the bout cautiously before Holly sent shockwaves through the crowd with a left headkick in the third round before finishing her opponent with a strong left hand. Commenting on her victory, Holm said ?With this win I feel great right now. I appreciate the first two rounds were slow, but I wanted to pick my shots and not make it too messy out there. I picked the shot I wanted and got the finish.? Bagging fight of the night was the bout between Chinese Li Jingliang, who came from behind to defeat debutant Frank ?The Crank? Camacho. The win was the third for the Chinese fighter who shared his thoughts and said ?My opponent surprised me with his speed and strength. He punched very hard. Because of this I changed my game plan for the second round to move more and land more low leg kicks. I knew I had the chance to finish the fight in the last round and it looked as if he was going down, but he was very tough and stayed in the fight. I trained for this to be a three round fight, so I took my time and delivered.? Sharing the performance of the night were victors, Ulka Sasaki and main event fighter Holly Holm. Among the fans were some who had flown in from around the region, sharing his experience Robin Rutteburg, an American based in Bangkok, 39, said "Singapore is a good hub for Asia for these kind of events. You guys have a good crowd, the crowd was excellent." The UFC?s next event in Asia will take place at the Saitama Super Area, Tokyo, 23 September 2017. |
