Milendo-Yaegashi IBF world title fight on ABS-CBN S+A PhilBoxing.com Thu, 25 May 2017 A week after Melindo pulled a major upset in front of defending IBF light fly champion Akira Yaegashi?s hometown fans and supporters, ALA Promotions? partner TV network, ABS-CBN officially announces it will air the fight on Philippine free TV via its' Sports channel, S+A. After two previous attempts, then IBF interim champion Melindo claimed the light flyweight crown from Yaegashi, who won the title from Javier Mendoza in December of 2015. Earlier that same year, Mendoza won the vacant title in a controversial decision against Melindo in Mexico. A three-division champion in the minimum, light fly, and flyweight divisions, Yaegashi has been undefeated since 2015. The Japanese has also fought formidable opponents in former world champions Pornsawan Porpramook, Edgar Sosa, pound for pound flyweight king (former) Roman Gonzales, Pedro Guevara, and Javier Mendoza, including current WBA world flyweight champ Kazuto Ioka. Milan, on the other hand, has had his share of world title fights against WBO and WBA unified flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada and Javier Mendoza. He?s also won over former world champions Muhammad Rachman, Carlos Tamara, Jesus Geles, and Jean Piero Perez. Writing about Milan Melindo?s surprising stoppage win at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan, boxing writer Nick Giongco reports that Melindo?s triumph over Yaegashi last Sunday, May 21, is the third 1st round world title KO win in Philippine Boxing history after Roberto Cruz in 1963 and Luisito Espinosa in 1989. With the title, Melindo joins Manny Pacquiao, Donnie Nietes, and Jerwin Ancajas in the list of current Filipino world champions. The telecast on Abs-cbn S+A is scheduled from 8-9PM this Sunday, May 28th. |
