DONAIRE STARTS WORKING OUT FOR DEC. TITLE DEFENSE
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 16 Sep 2007

The father and trainer of Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire, Nonito Donaire Sr, says the IBF/IBO flyweight champion is ?doing fine? in preparation for a title defense in December.
In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Donaire said his son hadn?t started sparring as yet and was only working out and doing the punch-mitts.
Meantime, elder brother Glenn Donaire (16-3-1, 9 KO?s) is deep in training since he is scheduled to fight on October 20 in Reno, Nevada. However, there is no word as yet on his likely opponent.
Donaire said Nonito is scheduled to fight the winner of the September 22 eliminator between 29 year old Luis Maldonado of Mexico who has a ring record of 36-1-1 with 28 knockouts and Puerto Rico?s 35 year old Jose Lopez who sports a record of 35-7-2 with 29 knockouts.
Lopez is the Latino and Fedecentro flyweight champion having beaten Juan Alberto Rosas by a majority decision on December 16, 2006. Rosas subsequently lost a unanimous decision to Filipino southpaw AJ ?Bazooka? Banal last May 5, 2007,
Donaire believes Nonito would have an easier time defending his title against Maldonado "because Maldonado is slower.?
Donaire said they are looking forward to training at the famous ALA Gym in Cebu after Glenn?s fight in October. He said it would be a great help since the world champion Nonito could get ?a lot of sparring in Cebu? because there are a number of talented sparring partners in the lower weight categories. The elder Donaire said ?if Glen?s fight is not going to happen we may leave earlier.?
Donaire said his son ?can handle guys who are 140, 145 pounds but he is going to hurt his hands because he cannot throw hard punches.Besides they are slow.? He said the ALA Gym has a nice track on which a fighter could run and the food was ?also very good and especially since Nonito likes sea food.?
