LARA vs FOREMAN LIVE ON SPIKE TV TONIGHT PhilBoxing.com Sat, 14 Jan 2017 Premier Boxing Champions kicks off its third season tonight with a world title clash between one of the most skilled boxers in the game and a former champion looking to pull off a huge upset and regain his crown. Flip over to Spike at 9 p.m. ET/PT for all the hard-hitting action from Hialeah Park Racing & Casino in Miami. Lara vs Foreman If you want a lesson in raw, devastating punching power, dial up some Mike Tyson highlights. If you want a lesson in the finer points of the sweet science - effective use of the jab, counter-punching abilities, when and how to throw combinations, hand speed, foot speed, head movement, feints, etc. - check out 154-pound world champion Erislandy Lara. The Cuban sensation is the absolute epitome of a boxing tactician - so skilled that he often mystifies the judges watching ringside. In fact, many fans believe Lara was at his best in the only two professional fights scored against him: narrow points losses to big sluggers Paul Williams and Canelo Alvarez. Since falling to Alvarez in a non-title bout in July 2014, the 33-year-old Lara has ripped off four straight convincing wins, the most recent being a unanimous decision in a rematch with former 154-pound champion Vanes Martirosyan on May 21. Tonight, Lara - who immigrated from Cuba in 2008 and now resides in Houston - makes the fifth defense of his title against another onetime 154-pound champion. A crafty 36-year-old boxer-puncher from Brooklyn, New York, by way of his native Belarus, Yuri Foreman brings a six-fight winning streak into this third career world title fight. To be sure, Foreman understands that none of those six previous opponents were as gifted as the champion he'll face tonight. But he also understands that boxing is the ultimate on-any-given-night sport. So does Lara, who has no intention of letting his guard down. "Yuri Foreman is a former world champion who is dedicated to this sport and will be looking to win another world title," Lara says. "I expect nothing but the best from him. But on fight night, I'm making another statement and going for the knockout." |
