CUELLAR-MARES, CHARLO-WILLIAMS TODAY IN LOS ANGELES PhilBoxing.com Sun, 11 Dec 2016 You've survived Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. You've even made it through multiple trips to the mall without once burying a left hook into the ribs of one of the many rude shoppers who bumped into you. Such patience is worthy of a reward, so tonight you're going to grab your favorite holiday beverage, park yourself in front of the big screen and enjoy two scintillating world championship fights between four pugilists who own a combined record of 103-3-2. Showtime will bring you all the hard-hitting action from the Galen Center on the campus of USC in Los Angeles beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. Cuellar vs Mares When two Hispanic fighters square off in the squared circle, fans are usually treated to a fireworks show. Well, get ready for an Independence Day-like explosion as 126-pound titleholder Jesus Cuellar meets former three-division champion Abner Mares. Cuellar and Mares were initially scheduled to meet in late June in Brooklyn, New York, but the bout was shuttered when Mares failed to pass a stringent eye exam. Now, though, all systems are go, with Cuellar set to make the seventh defense of the title he won on an interim basis back in August 2013. A 29-year-old from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Cuellar has been idle since defeating Jonathan Oquendo by unanimous decision exactly a year ago. Mares is ending an even lengthier layoff: The 31-year-old Mexican-American last fought on August 29, 2015, when he and Southern California rival Leo Santa Cruz engaged in an epic war that featured more than 2,000 combined punches. Mares dropped a close majority decision to Santa Cruz, snapping a three-fight winning streak. Now he's back and eager to claim his second 126-pound title and become a four-time world champion. To do so, Mares will have to get past one of the division's most dangerous punchers, as Cuellar has knocked out 75 percent of his opponents, including six of the last nine. Charlo vs Williams They're both 26 years old. They're both undefeated. They're both devastating punchers. And now they're both meeting in the ring - finally! Hard-core fight fans have been waiting more than a year for 154-pound champion Jermall Charlo and top-ranked challenger Julian "J Rock" Williams to trade leather, and now the wait is over. Charlo will be making the fourth defense of the world championship he won in September 2015, when he dropped Cornelius Bundrage four times en route to a third-round TKO win. Ten weeks later, the 6-foot slugger from Houston stopped Wilky Campfort in four rounds, then won a close unanimous decision over former champion Austin Trout on May 21. In Williams, Charlo will be facing a hungry challenger from boxing-rich Philadelphia who earned his first title shot with three consecutive TKO victories, the most recent being a seventh-round stoppage of once-beaten Marcello Matano in a title eliminator on March 5. Not only has the 5-foot-11 Williams stopped seven of his last 10 opponents, he enters this bout having won 57 consecutive rounds. Charlo vs. Williams is one of the most highly anticipated matchups in boxing today, with the winner not only guaranteed a title but likely a spot at the top of the rankings in the stacked 154-pound division. |
