WBC MOURNS THE PASSING OF FORMER WORLD CHAMPION BOBBY CHACON

PhilBoxing.com

The World Boxing Council and its President, Mr. Mauricio Sulaiman, have announced one day of mourning after the very sad news of the passing of Bobby Chacon, former World Champion, who died this morning in South California.

Bobby was born in the Sylmar suburb in Los Angeles, California, on November 28, 1951. He starred in several amazing and memorable fights that made him a boxing star during the 70?s, and an enduring legend forever after.

Bobby fought Chucho Castillo, Ruben Olivares, Danny 'Coloradito' Lopez, Alexis Arg?ello, and Alfredo Marcano, against who he won the WBC featherweight championship. He also held one of the most remembered and admired fights of the decade against Mexican, Rafael ?Bazooka? Lim?n who had beaten the Philippines Rolando Navarrete to win the world title.

The hard-hitting Filipino southpaw had won the title with a spectacular 5th round knockout of Cornelius Boza Edwards in Viareggio, Italy on August 29, 1981.

In 1981 Chacon fought Boza Edwards for the title and while he had many good moments in the fight he ultimately took a terrible beating with wife Valerie Chacon quickly becoming distressed with her husband? career.

Before his fight with Salvador Ugalde on March 16, 1982, Valerie begged Chacon to retire and that same night committed suicide.
Bobby Chacon went out and in his words tried to kill Ugalde, winning by a 3rd round TKO in a scheduled ten round bout.
Against the backdrop of tragedy, his fourth fight with Bazooka Limon was considered one of the greatest dramas in boxing history.

The 1982 title fight was a battle that words could hardly describe. Both fighters found reservoirs of stamina and courage that seemed superhuman. Drawing perhaps on their hatred of each other they fought a memorable battle before Chacon knocked out Limon in the final seconds of the fight to become champion again.
Chacon was named the Ring Magazine?s ?Comeback of the Year? fighter in 1982. He was also named one of Ring?s 100 Greatest Punchers and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June 2005.

Sulaiman said ?We will always remember you as a fantastic champion, but above all, as a great and wonderful person. All the WBC boxing family prays to God to give all of Bobby's family and many, many friends solace at this sad time. What a tremendous man we've lost!?
