The Games are over. Now let the fighting begin! PhilBoxing.com Sun, 21 Aug 2016 After two weeks of thrilling competition, the 2016 Summer Olympics come to a close today with the gold-medal men's basketball game. But just as the action winds down in Rio, it picks right up in the Big Apple, where a pair of 147-pound contenders square off in a world title eliminator bout on NBC. The 12-round fight, which immediately follows the gold-medal hoops contest, features an unbeaten rising young star against a cagey veteran who has title fight experience. It comes to you live at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT from the new Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk in Brooklyn, New York. Spence vs Bundu It's a little premature to call Errol Spence Jr. the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. However, few would argue that the incredibly skilled Long Island, New York, native is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world without a championship. That could soon change, though, because if Spence can take care of Leonard Bundu today, he will move to the front of the line for a world title shot against Britain's Kell Brook. Given what the 26-year-old southpaw and 2012 U.S. Olympian has done to his first 20 opponents - knocking out 17 of them, including the last seven in a row - it's easy to see why Spence is an overwhelming favorite to pummel Bundu. But the 41-year-old from Italy is hardly a pushover, having been defeated just once in his 11-year pro career, that being a unanimous decision loss to 147-pound champion Keith Thurman in December 2014. Bundu has since bounced back with a pair of victories, and he insists he learned from the mistakes he made against Thurman. He plans to use that knowledge to give Spence the fight of his life and earn the title shot against Brook. But wait - there's more! Following the Spence-Bundu clash and the Olympic closing ceremonies on NBC, flip over to NBCSN for more exciting Premier Boxing Champions action from Ford Amphitheater. The card is highlighted by a much-anticipated 126-pound women's showdown between East Coast rivals Heather Hardy (17-0, 4 KOs) of Brooklyn and Shelly Vincent (18-0, 1 KO) of Providence, Rhode Island. In addition to Hardy vs. Vincent - the PBC's first-ever women's fight to be televised - rising contender Claudio Marrero (20-1, 14 KOs) of the Dominican Republic will challenge Derrick Murray (13-0-1, 5 KOs) of St. Louis, Missouri. Both fights are scheduled for 10 rounds. |
