WILLIAMS WINS VICTORIAN TITLE PhilBoxing.com Sun, 01 May 2016 SAMMY 'CHINOOK' WILLIAMS IS NO LONGER THE QUIET ACHIEVER of Smithy's TGW Gym. He's now in elite company. He joins the ever growing list of Smithy's TGW gym fighters to be crowned a champion. On Saturday night Williams claimed the Victorian State Super featherweight title with a unanimous points victory over Melbourne's Shaun Thomas. At the end of 8 fast and furious rounds Williams was ahead on all three judges score cards 78-76, 76-75 and 76-75. The man named dubbed 'the chinook' scored a decisive knock down in round three and was dominant in the middle rounds going very close to stopping his opponent on a number of occasions. "This is a moment I'll never forget," Williams said. "To be crowned the Victorian State champion is an amazing feeling. "It was a tough fight but I was really happy with how I performed. "I always felt in control out there but I had to be very focussed he was a very dangerous opponent and he caught me a few times. "When I scored the knock down in the third round I felt like I could finish him off but full credit to him, he came back really strong. "I was able to land some good strong combinations and at the end of the eighth I felt I had done enough to win the fight and thankfully the judges saw it the same way. "A huge thanks to my trainer/manager Brendon Smith for making this possible. "Not a day goes by when I don't stop and think how lucky I am to have some one like Brendon in my corner. "Also a big thanks to Barry Michael who promoted the show. "Barry is a legend in the sport and I really have to pinch myself when I realise I was able to win a State title on one of his shows. "This really is a dream come true. It was a career highlight for Sam Williams but it's also a moment that will always be very special to Brendon Smith. Despite winning World titles all over the World Smith admits Williams State title win is one he will treasure for a long time. "This is one of the best victories I've ever been associated with," Smith said. "I've said it so many times but if I had a gym of 100 Sammy Williams I would be a very happy trainer. "This is a young man, who goes about his business quietly and is the perfect student. "Sammy never whinges, never complains - he just gets the job done. "He's no longer the quiet achiever - he's now a champion. "I'm so happy for Sammy. "He trained very hard for this one and it showed in his performance. "The uppercut he landed that resulted in the round three knock down was just picture perfect and from that moment I felt Sammy really controlled the contest. "Sam Williams deserved that win and I'm so happy he has that Victorian State title wrapped around his waist." Williams win was very popular in Melbourne as well as Toowoomba. "The texts I received after the bout was unbelievable," Williams said. "It just shows how amazing our team spirit is at Smithy's TGW Gym. "Staff at the Victoria Hotel, where we are staying were asking for photos. "We even ran into some people from Toowoomba who happened to be staying at the hotel as well." Brendon Smith added. "The hospitality down here has been amazing. "It shows how much they love their sport and boxing is no different. "This morning Sammy went on a photo shoot with his new belt in front of parliament house and Flinders Street Station. "It's been a great experience - we've really received a champions hospitality. "Thanks to Barry Michael for putting on the show. "Barry was a world class fighter, he's a world class promoter and most importantly he's a world class human being. "Barry's show's are high class and it's a pleasure to fight on his cards. "I have no doubt it won't be the last time Sammy Williams fights in Melbourne," Smith said. |
