MONICO LAURENTE DEFEATS EDGAR GABEJAN By Tam Almeda PhilBoxing.com Sun, 29 Jul 2007 RP No.3 Bantamweight Monico Laurente won by a majority decision over opponent RP No.4 bantamweight Edgar Gabejan last night in the “Boxing Kontra Droga” event at The Flash Grand ballroom, Elorde Sports Complex in Para?aque City sponsored by Johnny Elorde Mgt. Intl. The crowd was treated to a fiery exchange between the fighters although for this writer, Gabejan connected the more effective punches. Laurente simply used the hit-and-run tactic to wear down his opponent while scoring points at the same time. One judge saw it even while the other two saw it 97 – 94 and 97 – 93 for Laurente. Gabejan got hurt in the last few seconds of the 6th round from a couple of hard right hooks to his left chin. The two supporting matches featured 6 rounds of boxing between Jayson Rotoni and Bonny Maido in the flyweight division and 4 rounds of boxing between Rommel Discalsote and Bai Elorde, the grandson of the late Flash Elorde, at 131 lbs. Maido won by a split technical decision over Rotoni in a somewhat boxing-wrestling type of fight. Both fighters were warned in the 3rd by the referee for wrestling each other and not obeying his “stop” and “break” commands. Neither was deducted a point as they continued to engage in that way of fighting till the last round. In the first round, Rotoni got cut in the left eyebrow from an uppercut while Maidos’ in the right eyebrow from a head butt. Maido won as he adjusted to Rotoni’s style - jabs followed by a lunging left straight punch, by leaning back and throwing uppercuts and long left hooks. The scores were 48 – 47 for Rotoni and 48 – 47 both for Maido. Elorde dominated opponent Discalsote by scoring a KO win. It is Elorde’s 3rd win in a 4-round fight. Elorde connected more hard punches hurting Discalsote in the 2nd. Discalsote later fell down in the 3rd from a combination of punches the last of which was a straight right to his face. Discalsote was unable to recover as the referee reached the count of 10. Other Results: Ray Ramos defeated opponent Ricardo Tol by unanimous decision in their 4-round fight at 113 lbs. Both fighters showed talent in the early rounds by engaging in fierce exchanges that delighted the crowd. The scores were 39 – 37 and 40 – 36 twice. Jonathan Pedrosa never recovered from a hard left uppercut thrown by opponent Johnson Alde as the referee reached the count of 10 at 2’ 46’’ in the first round in their 4-round fight at 116 lbs. Another Jonathan - Jonathan Tacuning, won by TKO over opponent Robert Talape in their 4-round flyweight match. Talape engaged Tacuning blow for blow although the latter was the busier and the more accurate. The referee stopped the fight at 2’ 46’’ in the first round after Talape hit the canvass for the 3rd time. This fight was cited as the best fight of the evening which won the fighters a special cash prize from the promoter. Two judges saw the fight 39 – 37 and 39 – 38 while another saw it a draw as Jomar Elorde won by majority decision over opponent Ronel Dela Pe?a in their 4-round match in the minimum weight division. After the bell sounded ending of the 2nd, Elorde threw a punch to the face of his unsuspecting opponent. Dela Pe?a was examined by the ring physician during the 1min break and no point was deducted against Elorde. Joel Lagusan won by KO over opponent Celestino Oniot in their 4round fight in the minimum weight division. Both fighters got hurt from their exchanges in the early rounds. Oniot wasn’t as lucky in the 4th as he fell down and never recovered from a right hook. In their 4-round fight at 119 lbs, JB Balido went down in the 1st from a hard right uppercut courtesy of Joram Ballar but managed to get up beating the referee’s count. However, Balido turned his back from the referee who immediately stopped the fight at 2’ 36’’ in the 1st crediting Ballar with a TKO victory in his fight ledger.
