GORRES OUT OF WORLD CUP

PhilBoxing.com

Z “The Dream” Gorres saw his dream of once again fighting for the world title turn into a nightmare when doctors discovered a "slight tear in his retina" which prevents him from fighting in an IBF world super flyweight eliminator in the eagerly awaited Philippines vs Mexico World Cup of boxing at the Arco Arena in Sacramento on August 11.

In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Michael Aldeguer said that because of the problem which was discovered during the routine medical examination, approval for Gorres to fight Gerson Guerrero was withheld until a specialist examined the eye.

However, Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez and international matchmaker Samson Lewkowick indicated that Gorres would be out of the World Cup which would clearly affect the chances of the Philippines since Gorres was in great shape and considered an almost certain winner over Guerrero.

Aldeguer said Lewkowicz informed him that they would probably match Diosdado Gabi against Guerrero and scrap the previously scheduled bout of Gabi with Jose Angel Beranza who was brought in as a late substitute for Francisco Rosas. It was the second painful setback for Gorres who was clearly robbed of a world title when he dropped a split decision to WBO super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel last February 24 in the “Moment of Truth” in Cebu City. The overwhelming consensus among knowledgeable fight fans as well as local and foreign boxing writers was that Gorres was a clear winner but referee Samuel Viruet and judges Raul Caiz and Chuck Giampa had combined to rob Gorres of a well-deserved world title.

Trainer Edito “Ala” Villamor In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today said Gorres was “depressed” after respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer called up Gorres and broke the sad news to him. The flashy southpaw reportedly cried his heart out because he was eagerly looking forward to the fight and a chance to help the Philippines win the World Cup.

Noted eye specialist Dr. Arnold Salud of the American Eye Center asked us to tell Gorres “not to be depressed because the tear can be repaired and he could fight again” hopefully within a few months.

When we spoke to Gorres after he had recovered from the painful news he said “these are trials for me Sir. Maybe God wants to see how strong I am. Maybe God is protecting me, who knows.” However, Gorres said he was confident of overcoming his setbacks and continuing his career until he fulfills his dream of becoming a world champion. He said “I am only 25 and have many years ahead of me” adding with a laugh “I am a good boy Sir, I have no chicks or other bad habits.”

The Gorres incident added to the earlier depressing news that doctors had discovered a tiny blood clot outside the brain of Czar Amonsot following his gallant stand in a brutal WBO lightweight title fight with Michael Katsidis last Sunday and Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer said the Filipino southpaw would probably not be allowed to fight in Las Vegas again. Amonosot who checked out of the Valley Medical Center after he was given a clean bill of health by Dr. Debra Nelson is expected aboard the Philippine Airlines flight from Los Angeles this morning. Dr. Nelson said Amonosot should rest for three to six months and was optimistic that he could become a world champion some day.
