Arizona Boxing News & Notes with Don Smith: Desert Heat III, Valenzuela Wins & Boxing News

PhilBoxing.com

Boxing Fans, Kenneth ?Ray? Mitchell Sr. is a familiar and respected name in Arizona boxing. His long and storied boxing resume includes 37 years as a boxer, coach, manager & more recently (since February 2015) founder and President of Wild West Boxing Promotions based in Tucson, Arizona. On Friday November 13, Coach Ray and his team will produce and present their third show ?Desert Heat III? at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center in Tucson. First bout Starts at 7 PM and Doors open at 6 PM.

On tap for ?Desert Heat III 6 six fights and the marquee matchup features a 6 round middleweight clash between Jamaica born Nathaniel Gallimore (9-0-1-8 knockouts) fighting out of Chicago and Alabama born Michael Finney (13-4-1-11 knockouts) fighting out of Las Vegas. All of Finney?s losses were dealt by prospects and Gallimore?s draw came in a war with tough Umat Ryskeldiev. A victory by either fighter will position the winner closer to a minor title shot and a bigger payday.

Coach Kenneth Ray Mitchell Sr. decided to become a full-time boxing promoter after facing questionable hurdles when attempting to land bouts for his own fighters. The Louisiana native has spent 37 years in boxing; so he knows the mercenary nature of the sport and still vows to stay the course and add a new and positive dimension to of promoting boxing without sacrificing his principles. If he does succeed, his seven children will have quite a story to tell their children about the guts & grit of their father/grandfather.

Until recently Heavyweight Mario Heredia was to fight in the co-main, but a suitable opponent couldn?t be found so the under card has changed and here is the current lineup preceding the main event: Lightweight Jesus Arevalo (debut) vs. Jason Thompson (0-5), Super Welterweight Rafael Garcia (5-1) vs. Roberto Ramirez (1-2), Welterweight Rashawn McCain (2-5-1) vs. Reggie Young Henderson (debut), Ernest Muhammad Jr. (3-0) vs. Jose Caro (0-1), Joshua Zuniga (debut) vs. Misael Chacon (1-11-1).There are available seats and for more information call 520-448-5032. If you go, please don?t drink and drive.

Boxing News: Former Canadian Middleweight boxing champion Janks Trotter (9-2-1-9 Knockouts) sold his seasonal home in Buckeye, Arizona recently. Trotter has two possible upcoming fights; one in Las Vegas and the other bout in Canada?..Arizona favorite Abel Ramos (14-0-2-9 knockouts) is headed for a NABF super lightweight title fight to be aired on Showtime, Friday December 11 in Houston, Texas against Regis Prograis (15-0-12 knockouts). Ramos arrived in Chicago on November 3 to start his preparation for the biggest fight in his career.?.Journeyman Promotions President Andrew J Zak spends so much time in Arizona, the Grand Canyon State is quickly becoming his home away from home??Jose Benavidez Jr. (21-0-16 knockouts) is tentatively to fight Sidney Siqueira (26-10- 17 knockouts) on the December 12 Top Rank/Iron Boy Card at the Tucson Convention Center in Tucson; Oscar Valdez (18-0) will be challenged by Ernie Sanchez (15-6). .......PIO Greg Stiles is no longer handling media duties for the Arizona State Boxing/MMA Commission; Amanda Jacinto has replaced him as media liaison?.Thank you Brandon Rios for your years in the ring, enjoy your retirement.

USA Boxing Arizona: The filing deadline to become a candidate in the 12/1-14/2015 USA Arizona Boxing Election process has passed. We will post an official list in the next column. All of the potential candidates must pass a background check; so our list posted includes persons who have applied and agreed to a background check and we are relatively sure we know their desired position: Richard Soto-Chief of Officials, Jacob Magallanez, Andrew Soto-President, Mike Sanchez-President, Tom Garcia-Vice President and Walter Hoskins-Treasurer. We were not able to ascertain whether or not anyone has submitted their name for secretary or athlete representative. South Mountain boxing figure Juan Varela initially filed for Vice President, but has withdrawn his name due to personal commitments. The upcoming election will be held online for the first time; therefore, members will be forwarded instructions on how to vote; if you don?t receive the info-call L Smith at 719-866-2311 in Colorado for instructions. www.usaboxing.org will post official list of USA Boxing Arizona candidates as of Friday, November 13.

The vetting process is to insure that all candidates meet the high moral standards as outlined in the USA Boxing Code of Conduct available for parents to read online. The organization is screening candidates to determine whether or not applicants have a history of recent drug abuse, criminal record and verified examples of committing verbal, physical or sexual abuse.

There is no statute of limitations in filing sexual abuse or sexual harassment charges against an adult who may have committed such acts against a child, years ago; ask Bill Cosby. Any victim of sexual abuse should report it immediately to proper authorities. If no one listens, seek legal counsel and consider filing criminal charges; making sure a child is safe and protected is priority #1. Eligible members please cast your vote after careful consideration and don?t try to vote twice.

Silver Gloves: My first visit to the Paz Cantina, 1011 N. 3rd Street in Phoenix, was on Saturday November 7 to cover the two day Arizona State Silver Gloves Tournament; winners at the event advance to the National Silver Gloves Tournament. The Cantina is owned and managed by Michael Reyes an interesting gentleman who is dedicated to preserving Latino culture and serving memorable food. Mr. Reyes opened his cozy cantina in November of last year and I was sad to hear that the eatery was closing its doors on the Sunday November 8, the last day of the tournament. Let me assure you the closing had nothing to do with my arrival or something I said in my column.

Reyes told me his venue and adjoining neighborhood businesses were being closed for renovation purposes. Property management has promised him space when the project is completed in a year or so. In the meantime, Michael has purchased a food truck and Paz Cantina has become ?Paz to the People? on wheels during the renovation period. He plans to stay in the same area with a slightly altered menu while continuing to offer his highly acclaimed tacos.

During our segmented chats, Reyes is constantly on the move, he told me that he had opened 46 other restaurants for other people and Paz Cantina represented his personal vision of what he wanted a restaurant to be and he was very proud of the result. I was impressed with the street art represented on the outside and inside walls of his labor of love, Paz Cantina. To preserve the impressive display, Reyes took pictures of all of the murals and will transfer the images to his new and much smaller Paz Cantina when the restaurant re-opens in in 2016 or 2017.

Also very impressive is his confessed loyalty toward his employees. In addition to throwing a party for his departing staff, he also gave them a little extra something in their last pay envelope and helped some of his staff find jobs and the boss promised to rehire those who wanted to return when he reopened.
Reyes, a boxing fan, didn?t charge USA Boxing Arizona for use of the venue and admission to the event was free, my favorite four letter word. Tournament coordinator Mike Sanchez and the entire USA Boxing Arizona volunteer staff deserve a round of applause and a pat on the back for their loyalty to amateur boxing. All of the Arizona State Silver Glove Tournament will advance to the Silver Nationals in Pasadena on January 8-9-10; registration is 7th of January. F-1 Boxing won team trophy.

Outstanding boxer trophies went to Dorian Khan X (F-1 Boxing) and runner up Oscar Ponce De Leon (Fuentes Boxing). Here is a list of all 1st place winners: Thomas Valerio (MCSO Boxing), Juan Montes (Phoenix Boys & Girls Center), Dorian Khan x 2 (F-1 Boxing), Oscar Ponce De Leon x 2 (Fuentes Boxing), Micky Scala (Broadway Boxing), Luis Chavez (Broadway Boxing), Jesus Ramos x 2 (Ramos Boxing), Daryon Salazar (unattached), Elijah Garcia (Hammer Boxing), Kevin Morales (Madison Boxing), Andre Rodriguez (F-1 Boxing), Mariah Martinez (Knockout Boxing Club), Bryant Miranda (unattached), Brandon Lobatos (F-1 Boxing), Jose Miranda (unattached), Jaciel Carbajal (Sonny?s Gym), Moises Rosales (Fuentes), Omar Lugo (Salvation Army), Faustino Gonzalez (MCSO Boxing).

Rumble in the Desert II: Bout Maker Boxing Promotions Match Maker Eddie Rodriquez forwarded me a story from a local boxing writer (Ron Valderrama) who covered BMBP?s Rumble in the Desert II show at the Arizona Event Center in Mesa, Arizona on Saturday 11/7. I wasn?t able to attend the official weigh-in or the fight, but Eddie and Ron had my back, so I can inform Arizona Boxing News & Notes readers of the results. I know Ron so well, I can finish his sentences.

Here are the results: Super Flyweight Elihu Soto upped his record to 3-0 with a 2nd round TKO win over Gabriel Guerrero who left the Arizona Eventer Center with a 0-2 record. Soto is ready for better competition. Bantamweight Joshua Greer Jr. 3-0-1 thought he beat Mario Ayala 3-2-1 but only Judge Calderon agreed with the young Chicago fighter while Judges Harmon & Zazuetta called it a draw; therefore meaning it goes in the books as a majority draw. Greer wants a rematch and if both parties agree, just maybe it will happen.

After his six round headline bout, Super Featherweight Cesar Alan Valenzuela 11-4-1 hopes his UD victory over Carlos Castillo (4-1) gets him a little closer to fighting for at least a minor title, soon. In a 4 round bout, Super Flyweight Francisco Chavez 2-0 scored a UD over newcomer Gabriel Rodriguez 1-1 after 4 rounds.

In other action, Lightweight Lena Taylor (4-0) remained undefeated with a unanimous decision over Kandyce Williams whose record now stands at 2-2. Super Middleweight Cesar Barraza 3-0-1 defeated Freddy Contreras 1-1 in a 4 round contest. Phoenix favorite Billy Schmidt evened his record at 2-2-2 with a victory over newcomer Darr Stalling 0-1. Ernest Muhammad Jr. was unable to be on the card due to an arm injury.

Boxing Chatter: Heavyweight Malcolm Tann (Fight Hard Promotions) returns to the ring in Agua Prieta, Mexico (adjacent to the town of Douglas Arizona) on Saturday 11/14 and he joins fellow Fight Hard pugilists Jesus Serrano, Chris Vasquez and Gustavo Molina on the card. In other Fight Hard news, a spokesperson for the boxing promotion company announced two show dates in Phoenix: 2/6/2015 and 3/12/15 at the Valentino?s Event Center located at 43rd Avenue & Indian School Road in Phoenix??GGG hopes to fight the winner of the 11/21 Cotto/Alvarez fight?.California Boxing Match Maker Eddie Rodriguez is booking fights for Bout Maker Boxing Promotions and Wild West Boxing Promotions in Arizona, busy guy.

More Boxing News: Attorney Nathaniel J Carr III on behalf of client Arizona Boxing Coach Damien Stone filed a continuance motion in Maricopa County Superior Court to move 41 year old Stone?s trial date from 11/10 and the continuance motion was granted. The new trial date is set for 12/10/2015. Stone was arrested and charged with soliciting a police officer for sexual favors in early 2014. He was stripped of his USA Boxing Arizona Membership after word of his situation reached the attention of the USA Boxing leadership?..18 year old Leo Montenegro left Hard Knocks Gym after Clement Vierra sold it and now the soon to be professional is training at Ninth Street Gym in Phoenix. His coach and trainer is five time world champion Michael Carbajal who was spotted eating at Ringside Pub & Grub on Camelback Road in Phoenix; everyone has to eat. Until Next Time!
