Egay Gomez dies at 73

PhilBoxing.com

Edgardo "Egay" Gomez, one of the most prolific outside shooters Philippine basketball has produced, is dead.

Egay, a member of the great Yco Painters five that ruled the premier National Open Championship for an uninterrupted seven straight years from the mid-60 to early 70s, passed away last Saturday, October 31 in his sleep, at the family residence in San Juan, City.

Known for his 'jolly good fellow ways, Egay turned 73 last August 14.

Had the three-point shot been already enforced in his time, Egay would have easily made from 50 to 60 points at any given game, although Kumpadre Arturo Velenzona swore he, on several occasions, scored 40 points.

Egay is survived by his wife, Luchie, children Gigi, Gay and Gwen and grandchildren.

His remains lie in state at the Arlington Memorial Homes along Araneta Ave. in Quezon City.

Necroloical services will be held tonight with former Yco teammates -- Elias Tolentino, Freddie Webb, Vaenzona and Edgardo Roque, Olympians all -- among others expected to pay tribute to their fallen comrade.

Egay played for the multi-titled Painters from 1963 to 1975 under eminent coaches Leo Prieto, author of he Elizalde family franchise's seven straight National Open title conquests from 1967, and Tito Eduque.

Among his teammates in that span of his playing career besides Valenzona, Tolentino and Webb, fellow Olympians Olympians Robert Jaworski, Ed Ocampo, Joy Clofas, Renato Reyes and Marte Samson, Orly Castelo, Loreto Carbonnel, Rene Canent., Nonong Belmonte, Benjie Cleofas, Chio Bugia and Jerry Pinggoy.

Egay spent his playing days as pro carrying the banner of Universal Textiles and San Miguel Beer for three seasons from 1975 to 1977 before graduating to coaching guiding the Jose Rizal College and Trinity College in their respective NCAA campaigns and Apcor in the commercial leagues.

Cremation is scheduled tomorrow following the 9;30 a.m. Requiem Mass, also at the Arlington chapel.
