USC WARRIORS AVENGE LAST YEAR?S FINALS DEFEAT WITH WIN OVER NINE-MAN SWU COBRAS By Michael Kenji Izumi PhilBoxing.com Mon, 03 Aug 2015 Cebu City: The University of San Carlos ?Warriors? avenged their defeat in last year?s finals of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc, or CESAFI with a 76-64 victory over the nine-man roster of the South Western University ?Cobras? at the Cebu Coliseum on Sunday. The ?Warriors? pounced on the absence of some key players in the ?Cobras? line-up due to their academic failures with the Cesafi strictly implementing a commendable policy of requiring students to at least have a 60 percent grade which Jasper Parker, Daryl Goloran, Bernie Bregondo, Rey Mark Acuno and import Mupungo Boko failed to meet. Denied its big men SWU couldn?t contain the inside presence of os USC?s Shooster Olago who pulled down 21 rebounds, 11 of which were off the offensive boards. He also contributed 14 points, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocked shots in an outstanding all-around performance. The ?Warriors? shooters Nico Magat and Ian Tagapan torched the ?Cobras? with some accurate three-point shooting, combining for 28 points with 5-of-15 from beyond the arc. The ?Warriors? fashioned their biggest lead of 18 points in the middle of the third quarter before a spirited rally by SWU led by back-to-back MVP Mark Tallo and Melvin Holper who launched a sizzling comeback that erased the huge lead and went ahead 59-56 in the latter part of the fourth quarter. Not to be denied the ?Warriors? responded with their own blistering 20-5 run that gave them the lead for good until the final buzzer. Four ?Warriors? scored in double figures led by Nicolas Kyle Magat with 16 points, Shooster Olago 14, Charles Pepito 12 and Uan Jefferson Tagapan 11. For the losing squad of coach Raul Alcoseba, Tallo had 14 points to go with 11 rebounds and 4 steals in a worthy performance by the defending MVP while Javanie Luz with 12 points and Melvin Holper with 11 contributed to the gutsy effort of the nine-man SWU line-up. In the other games the USC ?Baby Warriors? demolished the DBTC ?Baby Greywolves? by a whopping 102-33 margin while the UV ?Green Lancers? cruised to victory by forfeiture after Cesafi discovered that both their CIT-U ?Wildcats? teams had failed to comply with the submission if the players ECG results which is a requirement prior to the start of the season.
