GORRES EYES IBF TITLE SHOT

Z “The Dream” Gorres, the stylish southpaw from the famed ALA Gym of respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer is eyeing a shot at the vacant IBF title.

Aldeguer was clearly upset with the WBO after Gorres was robbed of the title when he lost a split decision to Fernando Montiel in the classy “Moment of Truth” fight card at the Cebu City Sports Complex last February 24 aided by the fact that referee Samuel Viruet deducted two points from Gorres for holding without the usual prior warning. Aldeguer insisted Gorres is not looking for a rematch with Montiel.

Besides, Montiel has indicated he would not wish to return to fight in the Philippines and even if he did was asking for a purse of $150,000 which Aldeguer believes is a waste of money only to be robbed, at the same time indicating his displeasure with the WBO.

In a long distance telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Aldeguer disclosed he was communicating with IBF Championship Chairman Lindsey Tucker Jr offering to stage a battle for the vacant title in the Philippines, most probably Cebu, against any of the top contenders.

Current No.1 is Pramunsak Posuwan, the 38 year old Thai veteran who has a record of 37-1-1 with 21 knockouts. He too lost a decision to Montiel in a title fight held in Tucson, Arizona on October 29, 2005.

Ranked No. 2 is Mexico’s Martin Castillo who has a record of 31-2 with 17 KO’s. He lost his WBA title to Japan’s Nobuo Nashira by a tenth round TKO on July 22, 2006. At No. 3 in the IBF rankings is Dimitri Kirilov of Russia who has in the past taken a beating from Gorres in sparring at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym while No. 5 is Jose Navarro who lost two title fights against Japanese champions Katsushige Kawashima and Masamori Tokuyama and has also sparred with Gorres at the Wild Card Gym.

Despite the loss of his title to Nashira, the 30 year old Castillo is still ranked No.1 by the WBA.
