PETECIO WINS GOLD, BEST FEMALE BOXER; FERNADEZ SETTLES FOR SILVER PhilBoxing.com Sun, 26 Apr 2015 Palembang, Indonesia- Nesthy Petecio continued to dominate at the Indonesia President's Cup for Boxing at the Palembang Sports and Convention Center winning the gold in the women's bantamweight class while Mario Fernandez copped silver in the men's division of the same weight category. Petecio was likewise voted Best Female Boxer of the tournament, besting three other gold medalists, 2 from India and one from Thailand. The dusky Davao del Sur lass again turned the tables on a boxer who stole a win from her, this time Thai Paemwilat Laopeam. In the 2011 SEA games ironically also held here, Petecio caught the Thai with a solid left hook causing Laopeam to lose her balance. Although she did not fall, the referee gave her the standing 8-count, acknowledging the severity of the blow. Inexplicably however, the same referee suddenly turned around and slapped a warning on the Filipina (ostensibly for hitting with an open glove), which in the rules in effect then, gave Laopeam an extra 2 points. Petecio lost the fight. "Talagang gusto kong makaganti sa kanya kasi masakit yong nangyari noon. Kaya talagang pinaghandaan ko ito" (I really wanted to get back at her because what happened then really hurt. It's a good thing I was able to make it happen)", said the 23-year old who has been in the national pool since 2008. Fernandez on the other hand, got bothered by the swarming style of Tsenbataar of Mongolia and settled for the silver medal. Light welterweight Joel Bacho comes home with a bronze. ABAP President Ricky Vargas texted his congratulatory message to the medalists and the entire team for their "good job. This is a good preparation for the SEA Games in June. But the job is not done yet. Let's go get some shiny metals in Singapore! Safe trip home". Other members of the team were Aldren Moreno, Roldan Boncales Jr., Junel Cantancio, Eumir Felix Marcial, Maricris Igam, Aira Villegas and Riza Pasuit. Coaches were Pat Gaspi, Roel Velasco and Gerson Nietes. AIBA Technical Official Karina Picson was appointed Deputy Supervisor of the tournament while Jonathan Jimenez was team referee-judge. ABAP executive director Ed Picson headed the delegation, which was supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and the MVP Sports Foundation.
