SOUTH AFRICAN PROMOTER SUSPENDED BY IBO FOR NON-PAYMENT OF FIGHTERS PhilBoxing.com Tue, 21 Apr 2015 The International Boxing Organisation (IBO) has suspended South African boxing promoter Siphatho Handi for failing to pay the prize money of boxers involved in his March 22 world championship promotions in East London, including Filipino Junior Flyweight Champion Rey Loreto. In a press statement issued today, the IBO said "despite numerous assurances, deadlines and promises, as of this date Mamali Productions has failed to make good on it's commitment to pay the fighters, officials and sanction fees for its March 22nd tournament." "The IBO encourages Boxing South Africa to take appropriate steps against this promoter in South Africa pending legal action taken by Loreto's management and to avoid further embarrassment and damages to the participants," the IBO statement said. Handi through his Mamali Productions company promoted the return bout between Loreto and former world champion Nkosinathi Joyi, who is managed by Handi on March 22 in Mdantsane, East London, South Africa. Joyi was knocked out by Loreto in the 3rd round of their first meeting in Monaco on Feb. 2 last year and was again knocked out in the 1st round in their rematch last March 22. Before the fight, however, Handi through the assurances of Boxing South Africa supervisor Phakamile Jacobs and the representative of the Eastern Cape Provincial Government which Handi said sponsored the championship fight, asked the boxers and the IBO supervisor, Len Hunt, to agree to a delayed payment of the purses and sanction fees saying that the sponsorship money has not been deposited in his account yet. Handi signed a promissory note which stated that the prize money would be paid by March 25, three days after the fight and that it would be transferred directly to the Philippine bank account of the boxers' promoter, Sunshine Sports Management CEO and former North Cotabato Governor Manny Pi?ol. When boxers Loreto and Jetly Purisima, who fought in a 10-round bout in the undercard, agreed to Handi's request, Pi?ol accepted the promissory note signed by the South African promoter. Handi, however, failed to fulfill commitment to pay on March 25 and then on April 7, and finally on his last promised date April 17. "We have no other option now but to seek legal redress and demand through the South African court the payment of the boxers' purses, including civil damages," said the Sunshine Sports CEO. Pi?ol said he has already engaged the services of a South African law firm to handle the suit against Handi and possibly the supervisor of Boxing South Africa who assured the Filipino boxers that the prize money would be paid as promised. Charges are expected to be filed within the next few days as soon as Philippine lawyers representing Loreto, Purisima and Pi?ol have prepared the depositions of the complainants which will then be sent to the South African lawyers. |
