GOING FOR GOLD, ONE ROUND AT A TIME PhilBoxing.com Sat, 21 Mar 2015 Tonight, the DuBois High School will be the setting for the most renowned tournament in amateur boxing?the Golden Gloves tournament. This year, two local boxers?26-year-old Ray Reed of Brockway and 15-year-old Jake Buerk of Treasure Lake will both be making their amateur boxing debuts as they anxiously await their chance to throw hands in front of their local friends and family. Both boxers have been training hard out of BC Boxing in Brockport for the past year in preparation of this tournament, knowing they will be facing elite competition from some of the toughest gyms in the region. ?Boxing isn?t a hobby, it is a lifestyle, and to compete in the Golden Gloves, it takes discipline and commitment,? says Chris Cella of BC Boxing. ?People play baseball, they play football, and they play basketball; you don?t play boxing, you fight. Ray and Jake have been diligent in putting in the gym time, and I know no opponent they may face is working harder than them. It has been a pleasure seeing them progress inside and out of the ring, and regardless of the outcome fight night they are already winners. We can?t wait to see them go out there and do work Saturday night.? Fight night is going to be just another day for Buerk who is a freshman at DuBois High School and walks the floors of the gymnasium daily. The atmosphere and ambiance come this Saturday, March 21 will certainly have a different feel when the bleachers and chairs are packed, and a squared circle sits in the middle of the floor, standing three feet from the ground. But whereas the pressure of fighting in your homeschool gym, in front of your classmates, friends and family might get to most 15-year-olds, Buerk embraces it. ?I fight because I like to rely on my own abilities to accomplish a goal,? Buerk says with a confident smile as he gets wrapped up for his last sparring session before fight night. In the training camp leading up to the fight Buerk has worked close to six days a week to polish his skils. Jake Buerk will competing in the 145 pounds division. His training and sparring partner Ray Reed will be representing BC Boxing in the 165 pound division. Reed brings both devastating speed and power to the table, and has the heart of a lion. Since the day he first laced up the gloves it has been a dream of his to step between the ropes and go to war in the Golden Gloves, and he is driven to not allow anything to stand in his way of preventing him from getting his hand raised fight night. ?Boxing is a way of life that saved mine,? says Reed. ?The time most would spend at the bar or making bad choices, I spend in the gym.? ?I cant make any predictions for March 21,? said Cella. ?In boxing, anything can happen. My guys can fight the fight of their lives, but if the other guys is slightly better, then he gets the decision. That?s how it goes. It?s about going out there and fighting your heart out. Leaving it all in the ring. That?s all I ask of them. I know my guys are going to go out there, fight hard, and put on a show. As a team we would like to thank all of our sparring partners who donated their time to work with Ray and Jake in getting them ready for these fights. I couldn?t be more proud my boys and our whole team at BC Boxing.? The doors open Sautrday night at the DuBois High School at 6 p.m., with the first fight beginning at 7. |
