MEXICAN FLYWEIGHT CHAMP JUAN ESTRADA DEFENDS TITLE VS FILIPINO ROMMEL ASENJO PhilBoxing.com Tue, 17 Mar 2015 Mexico's tough world flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada defends his World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) titles against the Philippines Rommel Asenjo on March 28 in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. It will be Estrada's second defense of the titles which he won in a 12-round bout against American Brian Viloria by split decision in 2013 at the Cotai Arena of the Venetian Resort in Macau, China. Estrada has since defended his titles three times. He outpointed Filipino Milan Melindo in July 2013 also in Macau, stopped Filipino Richie Mepranum in the 11th round in Sonora, Mexico and stopped Mexican-American Giovanni Segura in Mexico City in Sepember last year. In his last non-title fight, Estrada outpointed another Filipino, Joebert Alvarez, in 10 rounds also in Sonora, Mexico. He is considered as one of the best flyweights in the world today with a professional record of 31 wins, 22 of which came by way of knockout, and only two losses. He has never been knocked out. For Asenjo, 25, it will be his second attempt at a world championship having lost in his attempt to win the International Boxing Federation (IBF) miniflyweight title against Rayito Garcia in Mexico City in 2013. It will be a tough fight for the smaller Asenjo, a product of the grassroots boxing program of the province of North Cotabato, in spite of his outstanding record of 26 wins with 20 KOs and only three losses. Asenjo is shorter and smaller than the Mexican champion and is moving up in weight from miniflyweight to get a chance to fight for two world titles. The Filipino fighter, himself a former WBO Oriental Miniflyweight champion, is given a power puncher's chance because of his outstanding punching power in spite of his small frame. Asenjo, who is now managed by Sonshine Sports Management, a sports management company supported by religious leader Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy, will leave for Mexico on March 25 along with his registered manager and benefactor former North Cotabato Governor Manny Pi?ol and boxing trainer Dante S. Lerio. Lerio's trip, however, would still be dependent on the issuance of a Transit Visa by the US embassy in Manila. |
