Kiamco, Biado, Chua Vie For Semifinals Slots In World 10-Ball Action Saturday PhilBoxing.com Sat, 21 Feb 2015 Johann Chua. Saturday's Matches: Ko Pin-Yi (Chinese-Taipei) vs Yang Ching-Shun (Chinese-Taipei) Warren Kiamco (Philippines) vs Ko Ping-Chung (Chinese-Taipei) David Alcaide (Spain) vs Johann Chua (Philippines) Carlo Biado (Philippines) vs Liu Haitao (China) GENERAL SANTOS CITY--Filipinos Warren Kiamco, Carlo Biado and Johann Chua won their respective matches in contrasting fashion Friday night and qualified into the quarterfinals of the World 10-Ball championships here. All three Pinoys face separate opponents Saturday at the SM City Mall hoping one of them would get a shot at becoming world champion starting with Saturday's 10:30 AM matches. Three players from Chinese Taipei, one from China and another from Spain comprise the elite quarterfinals cast. Biado remains as the only qualifier ranked among world's Top 10 players as the favorites fell in huge upset losses along the way. Biado, ranked 10th in the world, was in his immovable, solid form in dispatching Radoslaw Babica of Poland, 11-7 in the Round-of-16, as he remained unbeaten starting from the start of competition which attracted 128 top qualifiers from all over the world. Biado faces a resurrected Liu Haitao of China, ranked 11th in the world. Liu is coming from the losers's bracket after suffering an opening-day loss to Filipino Antonio Gabica. He was lucky enough to come from behind and beat Canadian-Filipino Alex Pagulayan, 11-10, in the round-of-32 before easily beating Ricky Yang of Indonesia, 11-6 in the round-of-16. World No. 13 Johann Gonzales Chua won by the skin of his teeth over fellow Filipino Lee Van Corteza, 11-10, in a neck-and-neck battle that saw no player clearly taking the upper hand until the last ball has been sank. Chua takes on the dangerous Spaniard David Alcaide, ranked last among the 128 players seeing action and also vying for the Manny Pacquiao "MP Cup" Alcaide, also coming from the losers's bracket, lost to the top seed Chang Yu Lung on opening day. The 36-year-old Alcaide from Malaga has taken an improbable run in the tournament, upsetting world champion Francisco "Django" Bustamante, World No. 15 Chang Jung Lin of Chinese-Taipei and Mieszko Fortunski of Poland, 11-7, in the Round-of-16. Another Filipino, the in-form 44-year-old Kiamco, came from behind through most of the way to beat Cheng Yu-Hsuan of Chinese-Taipei, 11-9, to arrange a duel with another Chinese-Taipei ace Ko Ping-Chung. Ko likewise had to go through the wringer to beat Ruslan Chinakhov, 11-10, to earn the right to face Kiamco, fresh from winning the Derby City 9-ball classic last week in Louisville, Kentucky. Trailing by 1-5 early and 7-9 late in the game, Kiamco found patience as his greatest ally in thwarting Cheng, who nearly had a perfect run only to fade in the latter stages of the match. Kiamco let loose a loud "yes!" after sinking the final "10" ball. He hoped to end several runner-up finishes in his career, having won silver in the Asian Games twice (2002 and 2010) and the San Miguel Classic three times. Ko will also aim to win big for his family as his brother, Ko Pin-Yi, has also made it in the Top 8. Ko Pin-Yi faces compatriot Yang Ching-Shun in the other quarterfinals match, thereby assuring Chinese-Taipei of sending at least one player into the semifinals, also scheduled after lunch on Saturday. The final game is set at 4 PM, right after the semifinals match. |
