Filipinos Legaspi and Silvano Score Epic Win Over Chang and Hsu, 11-10, Cop MP Cup 10-Ball Doubles Title PhilBoxing.com Wed, 17 Dec 2014 GENERAL SANTOS CITY--The Philippines' unlikeliest doubles team of Jordan Legaspi and Romeo Silvano scored an amazing 11-10 come-from-behind victory over the favored pair of Cheng Yu Hsuan and Hsu Kai Lun of Taiwan to win the prestigious MP Cup 10-Ball Doubles crown Wednesday at the SM City Mall here. Legaspi and Silvano were sworn enemies a few weeks back when they went at each other's throats in billiards competitions in Bulacan town where Legaspi comes from. Fate and circumstance joined Legaspi and Silvano, who decided to team up in the last minute for the doubles event. "Magkalaban talaga kami ni Romeo (Silvano) sa Bulacan pero nakita ko maganda ang tirada niya kaya siya na ang kinuha kong ka-pair sa doubles," said Legaspi, who scored his first major victory with an unlikely partner. The favored Taiwanese pair of Hsu, ranked No. 60 in the world, and Cheng, ranked No. 87, raced to a quick 4-0 lead and were poised to snatch the crown from the locals with a 10-7 lead in the race-to-11 games finals. But the Filipinos showed poise under extreme pressure and clawed back to win the next four games. In the 21st and final frame, Hsu scratched on the break, which allowed Silvano and Legaspi to spring their finesse and composure as the huge partisan crowd erupted in joy and applause to congratulate the new local heroes. The young Legaspi, 25, and Silvano, 28 from Dipolog City, received the $40,000 top prize from host sportsman and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao who was simultaneously celebrating his birthday Wednesday. The Legaspi-Silvano pair defeated the MP Cup defending champion team of Jeffrey Ignacio and Jeffrey de Luna, 9-7, in the semifinals, to earn the right to meet Hsu and Cheng. Legaspi and Silvano's title-winning earned high respect from their peers and the crowd as they displayed world-class shot-making. With the Taiwanese ahead, 10-7, Silvano scored on a magnificent shot on the "2" ball on a three-corner bank shot to allow a clean-up but still trailed 10-8. The Taiwanese also scratched on the 19th frame which allowed the Filipinos to clear the table for a 10-9 score. With momentum on their side, Silvano broke a perfect start, sinking the "8" ball en route to a clean-up that sent the game to the final game. "Hindi namin ini-expect na makakaabot kami dito pero salamat sa Diyos, naiuwi natin ang korona," said Silvano. "Maraming salamat sa suporta ni Congressman Pacquiao dahil kung wala siya, hindi namin makakamit ang ganitong tsansa na maipakita namin ang kakayahan namin," said Legaspi.
