ALCANO-PACQUIAO TANDEM GET SHOT AT ELITE CAST OF 16 PhilBoxing.com Tue, 16 Dec 2014 GENERAL SANTOS CITY--Two-time world champion Ronnie Alcano and pro boxer and Rep. Manny Pacquiao scored in improbable 9-0 shellacking of John Rebong and Angelo Ariola and earned a trip to the elite Round-of-16 of the prestigious MP (Manny Pacquiao) Cup 10-Ball doubles event Tuesday at the SM City mall here. Coming from the losers' bracket Pacquiao and Alcano's feat was the first 9-0 score of the tournament which saw the superstar team-ups of Shane Van Boening and Dennis Orcollo as well as Thorsten Hohmann and John Morra and the long-time partnership of Efren "Bata" Reyes and Francisco "Django" Bustamante lose steam against separate unheralded opponents. Pacquiao, the one and only eight-division boxing champion playing at a high level of execellence in another sport, banked on powerful breaks while Alcano followed up with accurate shot support to keep their quarterfinals hopes alive. They were facing the dangerous pair of Oliver Medenilla and world-ranked Raymund Faraon as of press time. Pacquiao bankrolled the $150,00 singles and doubles events in celebration of his 36th birthday Wednesday. Faraon, world No. 13, and Medenilla barged into the Round-of-16 still unbeaten and were ahead, 4-2 in the race-to-9 event as of press time. Also unscathed were the team of Warren Kiamco and Edgie Geronimo. They were facing the unpredictable Oliver Pulpul and Oliver Villafuerte. Taiwan's Ko Pin Yi and Ko Pi Chung were taking the challenge of Richard Alinsub and Christian Gariando. The locals scored a stunning 9-5 upset of the Hohmann-Morra in the round-of-32. Defending champions Jeffrey de Luna and Jeffrey Ignacio were facing dark horses Weben "Puti" Velarde, 23, and Jovannie "Vanvan" Edurece, 22, of Davao. The Edurece-Velarde combo brought down the long-time partnership of Reyes-Bustamante, 9-6, in the other knockout round-of-32 matches. Michael Feliciano and Baseth Mapandi tackled the favored tandem of Carlo Biado and teenaged Anthony Raga while Mika Immonen and Rodney Morris faced the upset-concious Lee Van Corteza and Jericho Banares. It was the Corteza-Banares combination that brought down the Van Boening-Orcollo team. Van Boening is currently world No. 3 and Orcollo, world No. 5. Other round-of-16 match-ups included Taiwanese Hsu Kai Lun and Cheng Yu Hsuan and Benjie Guevarra and Roland dela Cruz while Romeo Silvano and Jordan Legaspi were locking horns with Jeffrey Calonge and Patrick Gonzalez Meanwhile, the Philippines, through the wishes of Pacquiao, will bid to host the 2015 World 10-Ball championships in February. If plans transpire and with the blessings of the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA), General Santos City would be the site of the world finals. |
