Cebu Teen Sensation Eliminates Hohmann PhilBoxing.com Thu, 11 Dec 2014 ![]() Hohmann. GENERAL SANTOS CITY--The future of Philippine billiards met with the world's best and it sure looked bright for Anthony Raga as he eliminated defending champion Thorsten Hohmann of Germany in the elimination round of the ongoing MP (Manny Pacquiao) Cup 10-Ball Philippine Open Thursday at the SM City Mall here. Raga, an obscure 17-year-old campaigner battling it out among some of the biggest names of the sport, defeated Hohmann, 9-3, with powerful breaks and calculating counter-play, scoring sweet revenge over his opening-round tormentor. Hohmann beat Raga, 9-4, in the opening round but Raga had to claw back into contention after losing to another Pinoy ace Arnel Bautista in the third day of eliminations. In the loser's bracket, every participant brought with them their A-game, as top seed Shane Van Boening remained in contention conceding a loss to Ronnie Alcano Wednesday. Van Boening defeated Sean Mark Malayan to arrange a match with Christian Gariando in the other losers's bracket matches pitting Raga against Mark Romero, Richard Alinsub versus Arnel Bautista and Baseth Mapandi against Rodney Morris, among others. Morris was relegated into the losers' section after losing to 60-year-old Efren "Bata" Reyes on Wednesday's night matches. "I just pounced on his miscues," said Raga, who counts regional 9-ball titles in Cebu as one of his greatest achievements thus far in his years of playing in the sport. "I started at 10 and have been playing for seven years now, mainly in Cebu," said Raga. Sportsman Manny Pacquiao, who bankrolled the $150,000 tournament which attracted 120 players from 10 countries, beat young Brunei hero Ahmad Taufiq Murni in the other knockout matches, in a come-from-behind 9-8 victory, but lost steam against Jomel "Pork Chop" Sultan Thursday. Other matches still being played as of press time included Mark Mendoza facing Michael Pesidas, Demosthenes Pulpul against Leo Bayet and Ric Bejen facing Renemar David, among others. ![]() |
