"Bata" and "Django" Brace Selves vs Elite Field in Philippine Open 10-Ball PhilBoxing.com Wed, 05 Nov 2014 LEGENDS of billiards Efren "Bata" Reyes and Francisco "Django" Bustamante try to push back the hands of father time as they bid to add another feather in their cap in the 2014 Philippine Open 10-Ball Championship next month in General Santos City. In their prime, each man could light up a whole room and send shivers down the spine of opponents just by their sheer presence. Now at age 60 and 50, respectively, both men with diminished power but still rich in experience and savvy, are still considered "armed and dangerous" and could defeat anyone at any given time. Reyes and Bustamante, two living legends elected to the Billiard Congress of America's Hall of Fame, face the stiffest of competition in an all-star international and local field of participants led by World No. 2 and top, young American pool wizard Shane Van Boening among many others vying for $150,000 in prizes in the singles and doubles events. Reyes and Bustamante, playing side-by-side for years now, renew their pact as the dangerous Pampanga connection and 2006 and 2009 World Cup of Pool champions welcome all of the world's best combinations in the doubles event offering $100,000 in prizes on Dec. 12 to 16. Both are also entered to duke it out in the singles event with $50,000 up for grabs starting on Dec. 8 to 11. The tournament is bankrolled by boxing champion and billiards player Manny Pacquiao, who is also entered in the week-long tournament. Thorsten Hohmann from Germany, Finland's Mika Immonen, Americans Rodney Morris and Max Eberle, John Morra of Canada and latest entrant Stuart Pettman of the United Kingdom are some of the confirmed participants. Asia's best players are also coming. Five doubles teams from Chinese Taipei are vying to crowd the favorites led by the legendary Chao Fong Fang. World No. 3 Chang Yu Lung is also returning from last month's failed bid along with compatriots Ko Pin-Yi and Chang Jung Lin, among others. Van Boening will team up with Filipino Dennis Orcullo, currently World No. 4, in the doubles event. Filipino billiards magicians Warren Kiamko, Edgie Geronimo, Lee Van Corteza and Jundel Mazon have also confirmed along with champions from Japan, Indonesia, China, Singapore and Brunei. |
