Pinoy chess coach-sportswriter wins Thailand tournament PhilBoxing.com Sat, 25 Oct 2014 THAILAND -- A chess coach and sportswriter in Manila emerged as the victor of a chess tournament in Nonthaburi, Thailand, both in rapid and blitz competition. 37-year-old Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. won the Gainsfield Open Chess Tournament last October 19 at the Milano Restaurant in Nonthaburi, Thailand. Bernardino, head chess coach of Philippine State College of Aeronautics (PhilSCA) in Pasay tallied 4.5 points in five rounds, the same output of Rhenel Peligros of Davao City, whom he beat in a tie break points. ?But with some luck, my experience still prevailed in the games I [played],? said former Arlington, Virginia Open, USA chess champion Bernardino. In the final round of the five round swiss rapid competition, Bernardino toppled Chess4thai co-champion Thailand chess teacher Rommel Posadas while Peligros brought downed Bhon Bunnag of Thailand. Chess4thai Open champion Conrado Diaz, another Pinoy chess teacher here in Thailand prevailed over Manas Rao of India to settle overall third place with 4.0 points. Pilar, Sorsogon chess champion Rene del Castillo Jr. lead the huge group of three pointers that includes Posadas, Bunnag, Clark Mabeza of Daet, Camarines Norte, Juan Emmanuel Bocar of Samar, and Ryu Prasitsoonthorn of Thailand. Del Castillo, Bocar and Noel Anthony Alpez of Samar were adjudged top three best unrated players. Rao, meantime won the top junior award while Jesyll Alpez of Samar took the top lady plum. In the blitz competition, Bernardino, also a chess coach from the office of Quezon City vice mayor Joy Belmonte, escaped in a losing position against seven times Tarlac champion Henry Calacday in the penultimate round then edged Diaz, in the last round to finish unbeaten with perfect five wins in as many rounds. Other Filipino chess players who competed in the chess tournament are Rosalie Bulahan of Bansud, Oriental Mindoro, Paula Villanueva of Valenzuela, Jonathan Camangeg of Pudtol, Ilocos Sur and John Eric Alpez of Samar. |
