SANMAN LIVE GETS POSITIVE RESPONSE FROM BOXING FANS

Sanman Promotions of Gen.Santos City staged a fight card Sunday that was broadcast live on the internet on their Facebook page. This is part of their effort to bring the fight cards to a bigger audience. BRAWL AT THE MALL: COLLISION COURSE held at the Robinson’s Mall of Gensan had six professional bouts and the live streaming was opened by amateur fights involving local standouts.

It got a lot of hits online and the audience grew steadily from a few hundred to past eight thousand as the fights progressed. Sanman Promotions CEO Jim Claude Manangquil sent this writer a screenshot that more than 26,000 people saw the post on Facebook. The posted comments from the fans coming from the Philippines and overseas on their FB page were positive were very encouraging.

The main event was a hard fought bruising six rounder between Engelbert Moralde and Jestoni Makiputin. Moralde prevailed by majority decision.

The most entertaining bout of the evening was between Ben Mananquil and Kim Lindog. The crowd yelled themselves hoarse as they engaged in a give and take affair with Mananquil scoring a knockdown in the fifth round. This enabled Mananquil to win by unanimous decision.

Unbeaten prospect Jade Bornea, who is also the reigning IBF Youth super flyweight titlist, decked Nicong Calamba twice in the second round and the referee signaled the end at the 2:35 mark.

Jerven Mama beat Roger Salaton by TKO in the opening round. Dave Apolinario won by unanimous verdict against Rio Gulipatan and in the opening pro bout, Mark Antonio stopped Elizer Ambon in round one.

Promoter JC Manangquil told this writer in an online chat after the fights that he was pleased that their debut broadcast had a decent reach for a small card. He plans to think of more innovative ways to spread the word of their live streaming.

POSTSCRIPT:

This writer watched the fights online and encountered what is a chronic problem here in the Philippines. Our country has the slowest internet speed in Southeast Asia. Interruptions in any live streaming is to be expected. But I managed to finish the card and Sanman Promotions also posted the fight videos on their facebook page for the fans who were late to watch it live.

The slow internet speed in the Philippines will be a hindrance to broadcasting fight cards like this one but I believe this is a step in the right direction.

Last February, I wrote a article lamenting why local bouts are not shown live on Philippine free TV. I also noticed that the number of local boxing shows are dwindling. There was a time not so long ago that every Filipino channel had their own boxing program. That is no longer the case. Even amateur fights used to be shown weekly on Philippine television but they have since disappeared.

It is ironic that this decline in the number of boxing programs happened during the Manny Pacquiao-era. Showing fights online is a positive step but the fans should also do their part and make an effort to actually watch small fight cards and support the boxers.
