TAGAYTAY CITY---Filipino International Master Paulo Bersamina rebounded with victories over his respective rival to remain in contention in the fifth round of the 2018 Tagaytay Asian Universities chess championships at the Tagaytay International Convetion Center late Tuesday.

Smarting from a fourth round setback to top seed International Master Xu Yi of China, Bersamina, the top player of National University team manager Samson Go and United States Chess Federation master NU coach Jose "Jojo" Aquino Jr. subdued International Master Muhammad Lutfi Ali of Indonesia and climbed to 4.0 points, the same output of Fide Master Yoseph Theolifus Taher of Indonesia, who brought downed Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano of Far Eastern University.

“With still four rounds left, it’s still anybody’s race,” said the 20-years-old Bersamina, who bagged the silver medal in the 2018 Philippine National Games standard chess competition in Cebu City recently.

Woman International Master Bernadette Galas of Makati City settled for a truce with Jerlyn Mae San Diego of Dasmariñas City. Galas along with Manli Liu of China placed sixth to seventh spots with 3.5 points each.
