MAASIM, Sarangani Province - World-rated Julius Alcos finally showed his killer instict by stopping Jojo Rodrigo in 2:25 of the sixth round on Saturday night in the main header of the "Bakbakan sa Maasim" at the Maasim gym here The 21-year old Alcos, ranked International Boxing Federation (IBF) No. 14 junior flyweight contender, survived the dirty tactics of Rodrigo, who suffered a deep cut on his right eyebrow in the third round.

After absorbing left-right jabs, Alcos answered back with his own barrel of punches that forced Rodrigo to pull the left leg of Alcos and throwing him down on the canvas. But that did not stop Alcos from targetting Rodrigo's nasty cut with jabs and hooks in the bloody fifth round.

In the next round, Rodrigo showed his disappointment as he tried now to wrestle Alcos by carrying the two legs of his opponent from Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte. Alcos, however prevented it by landing body and head shots forcing Rodrigo to quit in the 10-rounder bout.

Alcos, also ranked No. 10 by the World Boxing Federation (WBF), received a golden trophy from birthday celebrant Mayor Anecito "Jojo" Lopez Jr. Lopez, 44, got a nice gift when his ward Richie Mepranum stopped Rommel Verdejo of Surigao in 29
seconds of the third round.

The 18-year old Mepranum, a six-time amatuer gold medalist, improved his pro record to 4-0 with three knockouts. Daniel Solis and Harry Cahapon, both of the Willie Neri Stable knocking out their rivals in the undercard.

Solis remained undefeated by stopping veteran Edwin Talita in 2:20 of the fifth round by a technical knockout, while Cahapon pummelled to submission Dodong Dumagat in 1:53 of the second round. -- Lito delos Reyes

Apa-ap beats Martizano
FORMER Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) bantamweight king Edward Apa-ap of Davao City outslugged Rey Martizano to score a unanimous decision in their 10-rounder bout last Jan. 14 in Midsayap, North Cotabato.

Apa-ap of the Willie Neri Stable showed too much class against Martizano. Apa-ap's stablemate and comebacking ex-PBF title-holder Ariel Austria, however, bowed to Jaime Acerda by a unanimous decision. "Nawala na talaga ang dating bilis at lakas ni Austria," said Jimmy Mata, officer-in-charge of the Games and Amusements Board (GAB).

The opening match saw Ruel Lagunero stopped Ramle Castillon in 2:30 of the first round. Three other bouts all ended up in similar unanimous decisions. Nelson Guindolan beat Argie Marapao (8 rds.-105 lbs.), Ruel Pansacala crushed Zaldy Bernales (4 rds.-114 lbs.), Kennedy Calambro trounced Lloyd Malinao (4 rds.-112 lbs.), Marjhon Daylucan outpointed Romel Aranita (4 rds.-108 lbs.).

Maasim sluggers beat DC boxers
MAASIM, Sarangani Province -- The local amateur boxers of Maasim Mayor Jojo Lopez did not disappointed their hometown crowd as they beat the visiting fighters from Davao City on Saturday night at the Maasim gym here.

Dimunitive Vander Panerio of Maasim outpointed Davao's Jhon Rey Rosales, 50-39 in the 30-kilogram match, while Julius "Wangbu" Trojello outslugged Davao's Jun Gonzaga in the 63-kilogram bout.

The other bouts saw Barangay Colon's Jun Ugbniel beat Poblacion's Jhon Rey Pasayalo, 53-43 and Maitum's Ruben Belliones outpointed Davao's Franco Neri, 44-41, both in the 36 kilograms event. The fights served as the curtain raisers in the 44th
birthday boxing presentation of Mayor Jojo Lopez.

Maasim, the over-all champion in the Kids Division of the last year's Panabo Invitational, is preparing for the ABAP National Youth Boxing Championships slated this summer in Bago City according to sports coordinator and boxing head coach Jonathan Tinagsa.
