ESPINOSA COMEBACK -- ILL ADVISED

At age 44, former two-time world champion Luisito Espinosa is lacing gloves again.

An unexpected turn of events for the once feared ringster who's trip to the international boxing hall of fame is being considered after an eternity of waiting. Quite a lengthy snub by IBHOF officials but Louie isn't losing sleep over it. What should worry him though is how he'll manage adjusting to his ill advised ring return.

I was part of Espinosa's sanguine start hence this renewed call to quit since diminished skill is distressingly tough to recoup.

Recall that friends batted for an out-of-ring stay after losses ensued following nifty drives that made him a rare double champ.

An unpaid purse is reason why the one-time golden boy of Philippine boxing wants to fight again---a happenchance caused by an inept agency that bungled a sensational title defense--- 6th round knockout of Carlos Rios of Argentina.

Some of those involved in his celebrated career as a world-beater worry on his move to box again.

I too fret hence my repeated call for Espinosa to quit for keeps---what with whippersnappers poised at the
corners all-set to strike to make a name at his expense.

The well from where Louie drew strength has dried up.

By the way, Ring magazine in its August's issue listed Luisito Espinosa as one of the 10 greatest Filipino fighters of all time.

The Pinoy ex-champ is ranked behind Gabriel Flash Elorde, Pancho Villa (Francisco Guilledo) and Ceferino Garcia.*

Why an asterisk on Garcia who is ranked ahead of Espinosa when the Pinoy ace was exceptional in capturing the bantamweight-featherweight crowns?

Garcia as a middleweight champion is regionally identified by California and New York Athletic Commissions. This limited notice of achievement came after a draw with Henry Armstrong.

Al Hostak was recognized everywhere else as the 160 pound titleholder.

A disproportionate inequity in ranking Luisito?

What's that tired cliche again?

When it rains it pours.

Not to worry Kid.

Your legacy stays as an outstanding champion.
