By T. Chin-Te

Mayweather (C) wins against Maidana last Saturday in Las Vegas.

PAY PER VIEW NUMBERS WILL DECIDE MAYWEATHER'S FATE
By T. Chin-Te

Whether or not Floyd Mayweather Jr – who handily won his rematch against Marcos Maidana over the weekend – fight Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao for his next fight, pick another opponent or retire, will most likely be dictated by the result of the pay per view buys of last Saturday's fight.

Mayweather, who holds the record of the highest number of PPV buys (vs Oscar de la Hoya, May 2007) of 2.4 million and the highest grossing fight in the history (vs Canelo Alvarez, Sep 2013) of almost $200 million, and whose accumulated ring income has reached $420 million, will be anxious to know the pay per view numbers as they come in.

“I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that we did good numbers. I want to thank everybody that tuned in and bought on pay-per-view,” Mayweather told a reporter right after the fight.

You see, Mayweather, who changed his moniker to 'Money' from 'Pretty', is a businessman first, fighter second. The business side of things always dictate who he's gonna fight next, or if he ever fight at all. Mayweather will keep on picking opponents with the least risk and the highest reward – but looks like he won't be able to continue doing this and apparently he has driven himself into a corner.

Mayweather signed a 6-fight $200 million contract with Showtime last year, the richest in the history of the sport. The first fight however, against Mexican-American Robert Guerrero in May 2013 with a reported PPV buys of 850,000, performed well below expectations. Showtime, Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer and Mayweather were forced to call in highly popular Mexican star Canelo Alvarez to fight Mayweather in the second fight to ensure the contract will not entail another 'loss'. Alvarez should have been reserved for a later date when the demand for a Mayweather fight would have reached fever high. The third fight – against Marcos Maidana – again underperformed in PPV with an estimated number of buys to be only 850,000 well below Mayweather standard. Because of lack of viable options and because Mayweather always refused to entertain the fight that people want, he choose to rematch with Maidana, hoping Maidana's looping overhand rights that made the first contest closer would translate into PPV sales in the second time around.

After Saturday's fight however, several indicators point out that the PPV buys would be considerably lower than the first one.

- MGM Grand was not sold out. Fans probably are starting to get tired of Mayweather and are no longer highly interested to see him fight.
- Betting on the Mayweather-Maidana fight was well below expectation. Again, a clear indication that the Mayweather mystique has waned.
- After Mayweather's Rice comments, women's groups as well as major publications like TIME and ESPN ran stories calling for a boycott on the Mayweather-Maidana fight.

If the PPV numbers will be at 1M or more, it will be business as usual for Mayweather and he could select Amir Khan to be his next opponent in a heartbeat. If it will be in the vicinity with his first fight with Maidana of around 850,000, Mayweather may try to negotiate with Showtime to have Khan as his next opponent. If however the PPV numbers will be around 700,000 or less, then Mayweather may have driven himself into a corner. It will be either fighting Manny Pacquiao – the fight he had been avoiding for so long – or he may opt to retire.

Except for the biting 'drama', the fight itself totally lacks excitement as Mayweather opted to run and clinch instead of mixing it up which would only hurt ticket sales on Mayweather's next fight. Gone are the days when Mayweather stood his ground when challenged – like when he was staggered by Mosley with a right hook in the second round of their May 2010 fight. Mayweather tried to mix it up with Maidana briefly in Saturday's fight but abandoned it immediately risking very little and put premium on his health above all. Running the entire 12th round in a boring contest may be the last images we're going to see of Mayweather.

Showtime's Tom Gray, who asked Mayweather right after the fight if he's going to fight Pacquiao next, may have marching orders from Showtime executives specifically ask that question knowing that a Pacquiao fight is the only way Showtime will get a return of investment of the Mayweather contract.

Mayweather however, if last Saturday's PPV numbers fail him, may choose retirement as the best business decision considering he always put great importance on his health. "I want to be known as being one of the smartest businessmen that came through the sport of boxing, not just the best fighter," Mayweather told David Mayo of MLive.com in the runup to the Maidana fight.

Oh well, if you can no longer sell snake oil, better pack up your things and leave.
