NBA - Knicks nail No.2 seed in the East

NEW YORK – With the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference at stake, the New York Knicks came through and dispatched the Indiana Pacers, 90-80, Sunday afternoon at the Madison Square Garden.

Without center Tyson Chandler and power forward Kenyon Martin, New York head coach Mike Woodson relied on his bench to deliver. As they have done consistently throughout this up and down season, the reserves answered the bell with Chris Copeland leading the way with 20 while J.R. Smith had a relatively quiet 15.

But it was star Carmelo Anthony who led the way for the Knicks, this time scoring 25 on 9-for-23 shooting. Carmelo's hot start gave the Knicks a 9-2 lead early before Indiana rattled off eight unanswered to regain the upperhand. The Knicks, however, had the final say and snatched a 23-15 advantage after one quarter of play.

The second quarter saw the Knicks open up a 31-19 bubble at the 9:50 mark, thanks to Copeland's sharp shooting and a pair of triples from Iman Shumpert and Steve Novak. Sensing that the game was getting out of hand, Pacers head coach Frank Vogel deployed his starters back and the Pacers closed out the half behind only by seven points, 47-40.

Although the Knicks had no legitimate big man manning the boards, the Pacers failed to capitalize on mismatches as the New York Knicks opted to play small ball. The 7-foot-2 Roy Hibbert could only manage a measly four points although he was able to grab 10 rebounds.

Lance Stephenson led Indiana with 22 points while David West added 17. Jeff Pendergraph finished with 12.

"His shoulder’s fine and I was going to put him back but I decided to pull him and ride the guys that kept the lead for us," coach Woodson told NBA.com. when asked about Anthony’s shoulder. At 53-27, the Knicks are assured of home court advantage in the first two rounds of the playoffs while the 49-31 Indiana Pacers are the No.3 seed in the Eastern Conference. (RYS)
