NBA -- Moses Malone dead at 60

SAN FRANCISCO -- Weeks after the passing of the great Daryl "Chocoloate Thunder" Dawkins, the NBA has lost another legend.

Moses Malone, a 12-time All-Star who anchored the Philadelphia 76ers' 1983 championship run in 1983, was found dead Sunday morning inside a hotel room in Norfolk, Virginia where we was to take part in a celebrity golf tournament. He was 60 years old.

"We are stunned and deeply saddened by the passing of Hall of Famer Moses Malone, an NBA legend gone far too son," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "Known to his legions of fans as the 'Chairman of the Boards' Moses competed with intensity every time he stepped on the court," Silver added.

Malone, a robust 6-foot-10 center, played for over 20 NBA seasons and averaged 20/6 points and 12.2 rebounds per. According to an ESPN stat, he is only one of four NBA players to log over 25,000 points and 15,000 rebounds, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain and Elvin Hayes in the elite club.

The 3-time NBA MVP played for eight NBA teams, but he made his mark with the Sixers as he teamed with Julius Erving, Mo Cheeks, Bobby Jones, Andrew Toney and company to sweep the Lakers in the 1983 NBA Finals. Malone was named Finals MVP.

"No one person has ever conveyed more with so few words --including three of the most iconic in this city's history," 76ers CEO Scott O'Neil said. "His generosity, towering personality and incomparable sense of humor will truly be missed."
