WBO ORIENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP TONIGHT IN MUNTINLUPA

By Atty. Danrex Joseph V. Tapdasan
PhilBoxing.com
11 Sep 2010

Sto. Niño, Muntinlupa City will be the noisiest place tonight as it will serve as the venue for a huge boxing extravaganza.

In the main event of the evening, Niño Magboo (12W-1L-1D, 5KOs) of the Touchgloves Boxing Gym will defend the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental Superbantamweight title against Jesse Albaracin (12W-3L-3D, 10KOs) of Tony Dacer Stable of Davao City.

This is Magboo’s first defense of his title that he won via a Unanimous Decision over Ray Las Piñas last April 17, 2010 at the Ynares Sports Arena, Pasig City. In that fight, Magboo relied on his excellent conditioning and won based on his volume of punches.

Based solely on the records of both boxers, it is highly possible that this will become a boxer vs. puncher battle. Magboo is more of a technical fighter relying on superior boxing skills to defeat all but one of his previous opponents. On the other hand, Albaracin is a feared knockout artist with an impressive 83 % knockout rate. He stopped 10 out of the 12 opponents that he defeated. This writer believes that “styles make fights”. A boxer meeting a puncher is a formula for an exciting and nail-biting war on the squared ring.

Magboo will play the role of the “hometown” fighter for this battle as the fight is promoted by Saved By The Bell Boxing Promotions headed by the youthful Elmer Anuran, who also is the owner of Touchgloves Boxing Gym of Agoncillo, Batangas. Even if Magboo will have the better number of fans to support him during fight night, Albaracin is not fazed by his more popular opponent. Just less than a month ago, Albaracin visited the hometown of his latest opponent, Eric Barcelona in Valencia, Bukidnon and knocked out the “hometown” fighter in front of a stunned audience. It was the very first knockout loss by the crafty and durable Barcelona. Barcelona was the same fighter who survived 12 hard rounds against the Australian-based Armenian “Raging Bull”, Vic Darchinyan last May 20 of this year for the IBO Bantamweight Championship held in Australia.

During yesterday’s official weigh in held at the Networld Hotel at Roxas Blvd. corner Gil Puyat Ave., Pasay City, both protagonists tipped the scale at an identical 121 lbs., a shade below the 122 lbs. limit for the Superbantamweight class.

Both camps were very confident of victory. Magboo and Albaracin looked ripped and in shape and promised this writer that they won’t disappoint the people who will be present to witness their championship fight.

The weigh in was supervised by the WBO Vice President for Asia-Pacific, Leon Panoncillo, Jr. Panoncillo expressed his extreme excitement on the actual fight tomorrow. He told this writer that the winner of this fight will enjoy immediate international recognition and surely land as one of the highly-ranked Superbantamweight in the next release of the WBO rankings. After winning the WBO Oriental title, Magboo climbed to No. 1 in the WBO Asia-Pacific rankings and No. 8 in the world rankings. Albaracin is surely hungry to take that ranking away from Magboo by shocking the pro-Magboo crowd tonight. Magboo, on his part, definitely wants to frustrate his upset-minded opponent.

The third man on the ring for this WBO Oriental Championship fight will be world-class referee Bruce McTavish.

The spectacular boxing card will be shown on the weekly boxing show SAVED BY THE BELL. This show is shown every Sundays at 3pm in Solar TV-RPN and every Mondays at 7pm in Solar Sports.
