Results from Laguna: Onggocan Stops Pantilgan in 9 to Retain IBF Youth Belt

Filipino IBF Youth Champ "El Rapido" Robert Onggocan (9-1, 5 KO's) successfully defended for the first time his recently acquired Red/Gold IBF Flyweight Youth Crown by stopping spirited heavy-handed Cebu-based Marjun Pantilgan (14-5, 11 KO's) by abandonment in his corner, officially an RTD (Referee Technical Decision) in round 9.

The action unfolded on Friday evening at Calamba City Sports Center in Laguna, Philippines; and the admission ticked for boxing fans was free-of-charge.

The 21-year-old Robert Onggocan - born in the southern Mindanao City of Dapitan - dished out enough high caliber fire power through the battle to force the brave but overwhelmed Pantilgan, 22, to surrender, prompting top international third man "Robocop" Silvestre Abainza to waived the fight off. The title fight was scheduled to 10 rounds, but did not make to the last bell.

The fight supervisor was GAB Commissioner Matthew P. Gaston. Ringside judges in Calamba City were veteran official Gil Co of Caloocan, Greg Ortega of Mandaluyong and the younger Jerrold N. Tomeldan of Parañaque.

BRAVEHEART VICTORIOUS IN THE CO-MAIN EVENT

In the co-main event of the evening in the 130 lbs division, Warren "Braveheart" Mambuanag of Mindanao's Agusan del Norte, proved to fans why he is called Braveheart by scoring a hard-fought 10-round unanimous decision victory over "The Notorious" Venson Delopere (5-2-3, 2 KO's) who hails from the paradisaical Bicol Region province of Camerines Sur.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old Delopere who in his prior fight also lost by points in Shanghai, does not need to be disappointed as he fought well during the ten-rounder.

Delopere should re-focus his fighting approach with his team. Perhaps increase his punching output as well as work in his defense as the young Delopere has a raw talent to go in in boxing. A battle lost, not the war.

MORE FIGHT RESULTS FROM LAGUNA, PHILIPPINES:

In a 10-rounder, 22-year-old Jr. Flyweight "Machine Gun" Mark Rey Taday (8-2, 4 KO's) of Maguindanao won a unanimous decision over "The Lizard" from Bohol Island Vincent Bautista Jr. (5-8-4, 1 KO).

The Lizard could not overcome the superior fighting will imposed in the ring by the younger Machine Gun, losing in all three scorecards. The ref was Jerrold N. Tomeldan.

Also, undefeated, hard-puncher bantamweight Joseph Ambo of San Nicolas, Pangasinan, got his new boxing career to a 5-0, 4 KO's record after castigating less strong Raymart Lumacad of General Santos City, overpowering him via TKO in the 4th chapter of their scheduled 6-round battle.

The still undefeated Ambo, 21, needs to keep focus on improving his boxing skills and go on to more exciting boxing challenges.

In another combat, unbeaten Davaoeño super welterweight Aurelio Angel Jr. (4-0, 3 KO's) stopped the shorter, lighter Ryan Medez (2-10-2, 1 KO) who appeared to be out of his weight class. The TKO came during the rough action of round 2.

In the first fight of the evening - which was a clash of rookie lightweights - local boy Jino Rodrigo (1-0, 1 KO) pulverized fellow debutant Jovani Navarette via TKO in the second chapter.

Its not known if the kid on the losing end, Jovani Navarette, is relative of Filipino former boxing world champion Rolando Navarette.

A BIT OF FILIPINO BOXING HISTORY

Rolando Navarette, now 60, is a Filipino fighter who climbed the ring more than 70 times. In his time, he battled some of the very best fighters in the world, including Mexicans warriors Rafael "Bazooka" Limon and Mario "Azabache" Martinez.

Navarette was stopped by Nicaraguan boxing legend Alexis Arguello in 1980.

But that rough thing did not make him give up: three year later Navarette knocked out then tough world champion Cornelius Boza-Edwards to win the super featherweight world title.
