Yazmin Rivas.
Yazmin "La Rusita" Rivas successfully defended her newly minted IBF Bantamweight Title last Saturday, February 4, 2012 against tough Argentinian challenger, Edith Soledad Mathysse at the Gimnasio de las Liebres, Rio Bravo, which lies east of Reynosa and south of Rio Grande in this Northern part of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. Scores were 99-91 twice and 98-92.

The bout was fought at a furious pace for all ten rounds, with both boxers immediately coming at each other at the sound of the bell. The two pretty amazons constantly traded volume punches in furious exchanges, with neither retreating. Rounds 5, 6, and 9 were very close rounds, but the rest of the rounds were clearly won by the more polished Champion Yazmin Rivas. It was also a cleanly fought match, with Referee Tony Weeks hardly giving a warning or separating each fighter up to the final bell.

The 24 year old Yazmin Rivas, 5'5" from Torreon, Coahuila de Zaragoza, Mexico improved her record to 24-7 with 9KOs, while Soledad Mathysse dipped hers to 9-4-1 with the loss. La Rusita's victory before a highly partisan crowd capped a big three-win run, starting with a 10th round technical decision win over compatriot Gabriela Gonzales last July 2011 in Polanco, Mexico to wrest the NABF Female Bantam Title, followed by a split decision victory over Australian Suzie Ramadan in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico last October 15, 2011 to win the vacant IBF Female Bantamweight Crown. The defining wins had remarkably bounced her back from two prior heartbreaking setbacks, first against the popular Jackie "La Princesa" Nava for the interim WBC Female Super Bantamweight Title in May 2008, and, later against Zulina Munoz for the vacant WBC Youth Female Bantamweight Championship in March 2010, both by unanimous decision.

On the other hand, 31 year old Soledad Mathysse, 9-3-1, 1KO, who hails from Trelew, Chubut, Argentina, was coming off a unanimous decision loss at the hands of Jackie Nava last August 10, 2011 in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, but had earned the respect of the Mexican crowd for her gritty performance, and landing her a shot at La Rusita's title.

Yazmin Rivas' optional defense of her IBF Bantamweight championship has been a presentation of Canelo Promotions, and sanctioned by the International Boxing Federation
represented by IBF Director and Fight Supervisor, Dave McCullough of Dayton, Texas. This is the first world boxing title fight here in the City of Rio Bravo.
