TEST OF COURAGE: HIRALES UPSETS HUERTA

By Jonathan Davis

A few hours ago, at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel at Aero Drive in San Diego, California, Raul Hirales,Jr. defeated Charles Huerta by split decision over 8 rounds in the headliner of Telefutura's Solo Boxeo Tecate 2011 series opener in San Diego. The event, billed "Test of Courage" was a joint presentation of Golden Boy Promotions and Jorge Marron Production.

Tonight's loss was the second heart breaker for the 24 year old Charles Huerta from Paramount, California, who had been on a 5 straight winning bout, after suffering a shock KO defeat at the hands of Derrick Wilson in July 2009. In that fight at the Club Nokia in Los Angeles, Referee Raul Caiz, Sr. stopped the bout after only 59 seconds of the 1st round. For the moment, it is back to the drawing board for Huerta, whose ledger now reads 16-2. 8KOs. The impressive victory by Raul Hirales, Jr. which was his first fight outside of Mexico, upped his record to 12-0-1, 7KOs, and served notice that he is an emerging force to reckon with in the junior featherweight ranks. The fight was close with Judge David Denkin scoring the bout 77-74 for Charles Huerta, while Judges Alejandro Rochin and Jonathan Davis favored Raul Hirales, Jr. with scores of 77-74 and 78-73 respectively. The Mexican toy bulldog, Raul Hirales, Jr. kept targeting Charles Huerta's midsection with sledgehammer blows but some of which strayed south of the border getting him repeated warnings and eventually a point deduction in the 5th round from Referee Pat Russell.

In the co feature 8-rounder, hot Featherweight prospect, Gary Russel, Jr., 14-0, 9KOs won by technical decision over veteran journeyman Feider Viloria. The bout went into the scorecards after it was stopped by Referee Jerry Cantu in the 7th round when he declared Feider Viloria unfit to continue due to an unintentional headbut. Nonetheless, the result was a foregone conclusion, as prior to the stoppage, Gary Russell, Jr. had been clearly dominating the fight in every round with timely counters and quicker combos against an opponent who was unable to utilize his height and reach advantage.

Other results:

Bastie Samir continued his winning streak to 9-0 with another 6th round stoppage over Loren Myers in their super middleweight bout.

Junior Welterweight Anthony Martinez was lucky to escape with a majority draw and kept his unbeaten record to 6-0-1. Going into the fight with 5KOs in 6 wins, the heavily favored Anthony Martinez scored a quick 1st round knockdown, but got cocky and suffered a 2nd round knockdown and from thereon struggled to get back into form as he became a sucker for Carlos Musquez's right overhand punches.

In a fight between two undefeated junior welterweight upstarts, Manuel Robles dealt David Morales his first loss with a 4-round majority decision win.

The finale was a well applauded all female contest, with Amaris Quintana besting Blanca Raymundo by unanimous decision in their 4-round junior flyweight clash.

The event was sanctioned by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) and the Lead Weight Inspector was Brian Morris.
