A Fine Show Of Boxing And A Class Act Of Humility

Marty Denkin.

Last Thursday at the world's biggest poker casino - Commerce Casino, Ed Holmes'All Boxing Star, Inc. presented another stellar night of professional boxing, topbilled by three 6 rounders and supported by four 4-round bouts. This California style of boxing, which has gained reputation as the "Biggest Little Boxing Show in America, alongside the current craze "Mixed Martial Arts Cage Combat" are now fiercely competing with each other as Side Entertainment Shows in Gaming Casinos and plushy Hotels here in California.

In the first of the triple main feature, Super Welterweight Hilario "La Cobra" Lopez, bucked a first round knockdown and had to rely on his ring savvy and instincts the rest of the way, to beat Aron "El Asesino" Martinez by unanimous decision in a non-stop slugfest that had their own crowd of supporters cheering all throughout. Scores were 60-53 twice and 58-56.

In the second mainer, undefeated Junior Featherweight sensation, Efrain Esquivias stretched his record to 6-0 with an emphatic third round TKO of Kristian Magallon, after earlier scoring a knockdown in the 2nd round. And, rounding up the last of the triplebill, Cruiserweights Benjamin "Trapiche" (little rug) Diaz and Danny Perez battled to a split draw decision. Trapiche Diaz scored a knockdown in the first round but had to stave off the spirited rally of his determined opponent for the next five rounds. Lou Filippo had it 59-57 for Perez, while Gwen Adair gave the fight to Diaz, 59-57. Jonny Davis gave a score of 56-56.

Results of the four-round bouts:

Ricky Duenas beat Abraham Lopez by unanimous decision in their junior welterweight tussle. Junior Middleweight Ruben Rivera won by TKO over Anthony Jimenez. Referee Wayne Hedgpeth stopped the bout at 1.56 of the first round after Jimenez was pinned down on the ropes and about to hit the canvass for the third time. Heavyweight Seth Colebrook scored his second KO victory with a first round stoppage over Ethan Cox. And, in the most applauded fight of the evening, unbeaten Middleweight Chris Chatman schooled Mario Evangelista with his fine boxing skills in scoring a shutout unanimous decision win, 40-36 by all three judges.

An Act of Huminity Saves the Bout

In a sorry mix-up of assignments. four judges showed up at the Commerce Casino Boxing Promotion of Ed Holmes, while only two judges were assigned at the Irvine Marriott where Roy Englebrecht Promotions was also poised to showcase its heaviest fight card in 25 years featuring undefeated lightweight Arquimendez Garcia vs. Johnny Frazier. Attendance at the simultaneous 8pm show at both venues were already filling to capacity, and Roy Englebrecht's Irvine Promotion was threatened to be cancelled. In an selfless act of humility, Marty Denkin, Sr., former California State Athletic Commission Chairman, and a boxing Referee/Judge legend, having officiated in over 200 title bouts, vacated his seat to newcomer Judge Jonny Davis of Anaheim, and voluntered to travel to Irvine with heavily building up traffic just to save the Roy Englebrecht show.

Asked for the reason of his kind gesture, he said, he did not want to spoil the judging debut of Jonny Davis, the newest member of the CSAC, whom he had fondly reassured before leaving for Irvine, "Jonny, that's what family is all about" No wonder, Marty Denkin, Sr is an icon and a very respective figure in boxing.
