FIRST WORLD TITLE FIGHT IN LORETO, MEXICO

By Jonathan Davis
PhilBoxing.com
13 Dec 2008

LORETO, MEXICO--(12 Dec 2008, 9pm) Mexican Raul "Rayito" Garcia, the reigning IBF Mini Flyweight Champion from La Paz, BCS, Mexico, is set to defend his title on December 13, 2008 here in Loreto, Mexico, against Venezuelan Jose Varela for 12 rounds in what has been aptly billed as "Segundo Defensa" by the giant promotional outfit Promotora Eco Servicios of Edrulfo Castillo Ojeda, in cooperation with the local government of Loreto, Baja, California Sur, Mexico.

The championship bout will be staged at the famed Gimnasio Medardo Meza Dominguez in downtown Loreto. Raul Garcia's optional defense tomorrow against the 10th ranked Jose Luis "Olimpico" Varela, will also be a rematch of their bruising and highly exciting fight last September 13, 2008 in La Paz, Mexico, where the Mexican successfully defended the crown for the first time with a unanimous decision victory.

Rayito Garcia had wrested the IBF Mini Flyweight title from Florante "Little Pacquiao" Condes of the Philippines on June 13. 2008 in Mexico City. If he gets past Varela´s challenge tomorrow evening, Rayito Garcia, sporting a sterling record of 25-1-0 with 15 KOs, looks toward a battle royale against the tough no. 1 contender from Columbia, Ronald Barrera.

In the much anticipated co-feature that is expected to be a humdinger, local hero, Francisco "Panchito" Reyes 23-5-0, 15 KOs of Loreto, Mexico, battles upstart KO artist David Gaspar, 9-0, 7 KOs of Tijuana, Mexico for the vacant FedeCaribe dela Association Mundial Boxeo Super Flyweight Title.

During this afternoon´s weigh-in at the open courtyard of Hacienda Suites, supervised by IBF Director David McCullough of Dayton, Texas, both Rayito Garcia and Olimpico Varela came in at the maximum IBF Mini-Flyweight limit of 105 lbs. for their world championship fight. Likewise, for their Regional Title tussle, Panchito Reyes tipped the scales at 115 lbs. in his second attempt after earlier coming in at 116 lbs., while David Gaspar easily made it at 114.5 lbs. in his first try.

Officials assigned to the fight are Californians Wayne Hedgepeth, Referee, of Los Angeles, Fritz Werner, Judge, of Chula Vista, and Jonny Davis, Judge, of Anaheim, and, Alejandro Lopez, Judge, of Mexico City.

Don Edrulfo Castillo Ojeda´s gigantic promotion, "Segunda Defensa" will be a historic first World Title Fight in this quiet and scenic Loreto, in Baja, Southern California, a paradise with its pristine beaches, and warm, hospitable people. New and emerging TV conglomerate, Cadena Tres which is co-owned by three`time World Champion, Eric "Terrible" Morales will do a live coverage of the Championship Fight.

The entry of the newest TV outfit Cadena Tres to the known Mexican TV giants, like Tele-Futura, Tele-Mundo, Tele-Visa, and Tele-Steca, espousing boxing, augurs well for more boxing promotions in the whole of Mexico, and made possible in large measure by the visible support to all these boxing activities in the Metropolis and the countryside by the International Boxing Federation, helmed by President Marian Muhammad and Championship Chairman Lindsey Tucker.
