SOUTHSIDE BEATDOWN: ALCOS VS BASADRE FOR WBF TITLE THIS THURSDAY IN GENSAN PhilBoxing.com Wed, 19 Mar 2014  An exciting FREE GENERAL ADMISSION boxing event has been put together especially for the entertainment of boxing fans in General Santos City. In the main event, Julius Alcos is set to clash with hard-hitting slugger Daryl "Flash" Basadre for the World Boxing Federation (WBF) International Super Flyweight (115 lbs) belt this Thursday (March 20) at Lagao Gym in Gensan, Philippines. The Julius Alcos vs Daryl Basadre fight is important because the winner will be a challenger for the vacant WBF Super Flyweight World Title on Friday May 9 in Namibia," informed promoter Jim Claude Manangquil of JM Promotions today. Owner of a damaging punch, the 21-year-old "Flash" Basadre (10-1-1, 7 KO's) might the favorite one in the bets, pero the serious Julius Alcos - born in Davao del Norte, now training in Cebu City - does not want to let pass the golden chance of fighting for a world title. Surely, Basadre might have a big punch, but Alcos owns more ring experience. Alcos has climbed the ring 35 times. Winning 22 fights with very few knockouts. Basadre is not a big puncher but ring knowledge he has. In his last fight, Julius Alcos knocked out Koronadal Kid Rowel Garcia, and the Cebu resident now wants more wins. Alcos or Basadre...who will win this Thursday night at Lagao Gym to go on to battle for the WBF World Title? EXCITING UNDERCARDS In the co-main event, the reigning Philippines Boxing Federation (PBF) Flyweight champion Jason "Dodong" Canoy (17-4-2, 12 KO's) of Balamban, Cebu, will exchange sharp blows with 24-year-old Ronerex Dalut of Gensan. Last year, Jason Canoy fought for the Inter-Continental 112 lbs title in Ukraine, losing due to a cut on his left eye, but gaining important international ring experience. Will that experience help on Thursday night? We'll find out. The Canoy VS Dalut 10-rounder is not for Canoy's PBF title, but it promises to be a tough war, specially for Ronerex Dalut. But Dalut, born and raised in Gensan, will count with the cheers and support of the fans. In another TNT action bout, 112-pounder Raymond Tabugon (11-3-1, 4 KO's) of Cagayan de Oro will battle tough veteran Michael Rodriguez of General Santos City in an 8-rounder in the flyweight division. Michael Rodriguez does not have a winning record, probably one of the worst among Filipino active fighters. I have seen him in action several times in the Philippines and Thailand and he is fearless he'd fight anyone, anytime, anywhere. One particular fight of Michael Rodriguez pops in my mind: his fight against Randy Petalcorin. In my humble opinion, Michael Rodriguez should have been the winner in that highly controversial clash two years ago in Cebu. I was in ringside and to this day I believe that opponent Petalcorin should have been disqualified as he wallowed about on the canvas faking pain from an illegal blow allegedly thrown by Rodriguez. Petalcorin remained in that horrible acting mode on the canvas, convincing the referee of his "pain"... but showing fans that he has not heart. I did not buy that acting. That night, the referee who happened to be my dear amigo Silvester "Robocop" Abainza took the wrong decision of disqualifying Michael Rodriguez. Yes, the one who should have been sent to the shower rooms was Petalcorin. But this is my personal opinion. Anyway, that is past. One thing is present and is sure: Michael Rodriguez has gotten inside the square ring the very best boxers in the world in his division, including world ranked fighters and several world champions. The heart and experience of Michael Rodriguez is undeniable. So his opponent, Tabugon, will have a rough fight ahead of him as and I see Michael Rodriguez winning on points. Why by points? In a total of 52 fights, Michael Rodriguez has knocked out only 3 opponent. We do not need compubox. Simply, it does not feel that Tabugon will be Michael's knockout win number cuatro. Highly unlikely. Pero we shall see. Another interesting fight is this: 24 year-old southpaw Jordan Peter Catubay (5-2-1, 2 KO's) of Zamboanga del Norte colliding with Rowel Garcia of Koronadal City in a 6-rounder in the super bantamweight division. Garcia is one year younger than Catubay, but doubles Garcia in fighting experience. This is an intriguing match up with the winner getting his boxing career in the right track. The first bout in this Thursday evening card will be a 4-rounder clash between rookies 17-year-old Raymart Grande Gaballo (1-0, 1 KO) of Gensan - who won his first pro fight a couple weeks ago in Iligan - and debutant Mike Kawsing. Mike Kawsing has been training hard following his dream of becoming a successful professional boxer. This thursday will be his first fight and you should be there to encourage him. It's in cards like this one where future boxing stars begin their journey to stardom. You never know. So can't miss it. So far, it seems that this time citizens of Gensan got it right as Rivera's positivism in sports is helping boxing in General Santos City, attitude that is being highly appreciated by the community.
